- 1. Homelearning- Follow spot Research Why do we use follow spots? Follow spots are used to point out specific people on stage to either show status or importance at that moment in time. They single out people and they can be stood still with a follow spot on them or moving round. Who gets spotted? Characters on stagewho may possibly havean importance in the production. What type of light is usedfor follow spotting and what controls are available to the operator? The type of light used is the Profile Spot(650 W lamp/ has variable beam angle and edge control) and the controls are; 1. Choppers- cuts or shutters the top and bottom part of the beams 2. Douser- controls intensity 3. Iris- controls beam size 4. Trombone- controls focal length 5. Colour frames- changes the colour of the light. Colour gels are counted from the rear of the follow spot. How is it set up? Is there adifference betweenafollow spot and the lighting inthe rig? What are the main differences? The follow spotis a light that a person stands with and the light is on a stand so that the person is able to move the light around to follow the person they are spotting. Where as the lighting rig is a piece of equipment which has switches to turn the rigged lights on and off whenever and wherever for general lighting. An example of a make of follow spot that might be usedin our theatre: Profile spot650W lamp has a variable beam angle and edge control.
