This document contains the production diary of a student documenting their progress on an A2 Media Studies advanced portfolio project over several months. It includes summaries of work completed each month/week on creating music videos and ancillary materials. September 2012
(Detailed Monthly Summary)
I chose which of the 3 media products I wanted to make, and chose
to create a music video. I began to research album covers, album
back covers and cd labels so that I could get ideas for when I
created my own. I began to make my album cover, basing this on
the genre of pop.
I plan to continue with my first ancillary project and
complete this. I then plan to research for my ancillary 2
project.
October 2012
(Detailed Monthly Summary)
I edited my album cover, back cover and cd label. I edited these to
improve them so that they looked better and more conventional of
the pop genre. I then started to look at posters which were in
magazines and I analysed these so that I could look at the key
components in which I could use on my poster.
I plan to create my poster and research music videos
which could inspire me with ideas for my own video.
November 2012
(Detailed Monthly Summary)
I started my poster; I took two lessons for this which is the
equivalent of two weeks, as we have a lesson a week. I then took a
lesson to edit my poster and improve it so that it was better and I
was fully confident in my poster. I then spent a lesson looking at
music videos of the same genre that could give me ideas for my
own video.
I plan to continue researching videos and then I will
start to analyse elements in these videos. This will then
give me an idea of what to do in my video.
December 2012

I analysed elements of 3 videos: Too Close by Maddi Jane and CJ
Holland, Give Your Heart a Break by Demi Lovato and Call the Shots
by Girls Aloud. These are all videos which fit under the Pop genre
as this is the genre that me and my group chose.
I plan to start thinking of locations of where to shoot my
video. I also look to plan make up and outfits of my
artist in the video and when to shoot my video.

When we got back for my scheduled Coursework lesson I had an
exam, therefore in this week I did not do any of my coursework
this week. However, I continued to think of ideas that can go in my
music video.
Next week I plan to do a mind map of ideas with my
group.

(Detailed Weekly Summary)
This week I and my group created a mind map with lots of ideas
and symbolic codes that we wanted to use in our music video
when created. I also created a questionnaire for my Market
Research and handed them out to people in my college.
Next week I plan to work together with group and
create a report stating what elements are video will
consist of. Also I want to analyse my results gathered
from my questionnaire.

This week my group created a report which states what our video
will include and why. I also created a report to analyse my results
gathered from my questionnaire. This was to see which music
genre people preferred and what they expect to see in a music
video.
Next week I plan to finish my report in which I analysed
my results from my questionnaire.

I finished my report, analysing the results that I had collected from
my questionnaire.
I plan to create a storyboard pulling together our ideas
from the mind map.

(Detailed Weekly Summary)
We created a storyboard; we did not complete this as we took
time to create shots that related to the lines of the lyrics of the
song. This allowed us to visualise what we had to film, whilst also
giving us a plan to follow.
We plan to carry on with our storyboard next week.
Next week we plan to make our script for our video,
which involves relating the shot types from our
storyboard.

(Detailed Weekly Summary)
This week we completed our storyboard. We tried to relate as
many words to each shot, for example for the line ’under haunted
skies I see you’ we plan to film the skies above the beach that we
will shoot our video on. Whilst doing this we also created and
completed our script, writing a description of the shot types and
effects which we plan to use.
Next week, during the holidays we plan to go to the
beach and shoot our scenes.

This week we went to Ainsdale Beach to film our shots. This
included using a tripod to steady the camera, to enable us to film
mostly long shots, close up shots and high angle shots. We
collected all of our footage this week.
We plan to start putting together our video and editing
the footage so all shots transcend into one.

We started to edit our footage, using the effect cross dissolve to
edit the shots together. This is effective as the editing technique
makes each scene follow on more effectively to the next scene. It
also makes it look more professional and effective.
Our plan for next week is to carry on editing and
creating our video.

This week we finished the first draft of our video, however we plan
to go back to edit and change a few scenes to make them more
effective and professional.
Our plan for the holidays is to update our ancillary tasks,
so that they have the right song name and artist name
on. We will also start our evaluation.

This week I created my evaluation, I then created a Prezi for my
first question. For the 2nd
question I created a word document. And
for the fourth question I created a presentation.
Next week I plan to make a Prezi for my third question
relating to my focus group this is so that I will use
different forms of technology to evaluate my media
product. I plan to record a few voice recordings to go
along with my presentation for question 4.

In this final week I have made sure that everything is on my blog,
using a checklist. I created a Prezi and wrote my evaluation for
question 3, using my focus group.
