Most companies strive to be better and more efficient; few understand that Product
Management is a critical function to make this happen. In my experience, companies often confuse and misuse Product Management. These companies risk building the wrong product, adopt the wrong strategy or implement ineffective marketing approaches. A recent study of experienced product managers and marketing managers from different companies and industries identified common challenges impacting their effectiveness and productivity. This session will identify ways to deal with these challenges and will explain why a collaborative environment is essential for the success of product management teams.
This session will help you build and effectively manage a product management team. It will identify ways to empower your product management team to lead cross-functional product teams effectively. Join Hector Del Castillo as he shares his insights on why growing high performing product management teams is critical for product-driven organizations.
Hector Del Castillo brings over 15 years of experience directing product strategy for product-driven companies to create new revenue streams by implementing a product life cycle management process, realigning the business model, and growing high-performance product teams. He has launched several profitable technology-based products and solutions.

Global Product Management Talk On Feature Prioritization with Amy Lightholder, Agile Coach, @alightholder
A good product backlog is at the heart of any well-functioning agile team. A good product backlog does not automatically ensure good software. However, the lack of a good product backlog often results in incomplete software that does not meet the requirements of customers and stakeholders. The most effective product teams can demonstrate how their prioritization supports larger business priorities (and when the business priorities aren’t clear, these teams clarify them!).

Despite lockdown, demanding to work from home, Design Sprints can be used successfully to answer critical business questions by sparking innovation, encourage user-centered thinking, aligning teams under a shared vision, and gaining insights about the marketability of products before their launch – if you know how to do them remote.
This talk will provide an intensive and compact introduction into the method mix from Google Ventures, how this structured process works, about its strengths, and most importantly, how it can be conducted successfully as “remote”. Since this is significantly different to “in-person”, this will cover a comparison of the physical and digital version of Design Sprints – and it provides a lot of practical insights for remote workshops in general too.

Putting the SPARK into Virtual Training.pptxCynthia Clay
This 60-minute webinar, sponsored by Adobe, was delivered for the Training Mag Network. It explored the five elements of SPARK: Storytelling, Purpose, Action, Relationships, and Kudos. Knowing how to tell a well-structured story is key to building long-term memory. Stating a clear purpose that doesn't take away from the discovery learning process is critical. Ensuring that people move from theory to practical application is imperative. Creating strong social learning is the key to commitment and engagement. Validating and affirming participants' comments is the way to create a positive learning environment.

rcauvin A3: At first, implement the feature only to the extent it is necessary for minimum viable product (MVP). -
4:33 PM Jun 20th, 2011

lmckeogh A3: cannot be all things to all customers -4:34 PM Jun 20th, 2011
ErikaLAndersen RT @swanwick: RT @rcauvin: Product vision selects a set of prospect problems under a central
theme. -4:34 PM Jun 20th, 2011
rcauvin A3: Use the implementation of the feature & release of the MVP to learn more about the true needs of the
market. -4:34 PM Jun 20th, 2011
zoernert @swanwick The legend says, that before "Palm" was invented the founder said "It needs to fit into my shirt"
- so he crafted... -4:34 PM Jun 20th, 2011
swanwick @brainmates humour me with a generalization since we don't have the luxury of full consultation via 140
chars. :) -4:34 PM Jun 20th, 2011
zoernert @swanwick ...carried it a few days around - used it whenever he would use a "Palm" . So he had the "User
experience" first. -4:35 PM Jun 20th, 2011

ErikaLAndersen RT @rcauvin: A3: At first, implement the feature only to extent necessary for minimum viable
product. -4:36 PM Jun 20th, 2011
swanwick @rcauvin great point. What about extending beyond MVP? -4:36 PM Jun 20th, 2011
brainmates RT @rcauvin: Implement the feature only to the extent it is necessary for minimum viable product
(MVP). -4:36 PM Jun 20th, 2011
ProdMgmtTalk Hacker News | The story of round rectangles http://bit.ly/lW6xmY re: Jeff Hawkins team leader,
wanted Palm Pilot to be simple -4:37 PM Jun 20th, 2011
rcauvin @swanwick Implement customer request only to the extent it reinforces product theme & is needed for
MVP. -4:37 PM Jun 20th, 2011
rcauvin @swanwick Once we release MVP, we "test" our requirements & feature assumptions and go further if
validated. -4:38 PM Jun 20th, 2011
swanwick So for extent. We use yellow=MVP, green=covers user need without too many mice running on the
wheel. ..... -4:40 PM Jun 20th, 2011
swanwick blue=long-term scaleable solution. -4:40 PM Jun 20th, 2011
swanwick While 3 colors is somewhat simplistic, we find that it dramatically helps with iteration planning discussions.
-4:41 PM Jun 20th, 2011
swanwick and stops us from trying to go for a blue before we have iterated through yellow and green. -4:41 PM Jun
20th, 2011
rcauvin A3: Extent to which we implement cust request is determined by return on investment. -4:41 PM Jun 20th,
2011
swanwick Q4: anyone use something similar to that color method for deciding what LEVEL to accomplish a given
feature? -4:42 PM Jun 20th, 2011
ErikaLAndersen Test with customers? Against market? RT@rcauvin: @swanwick "test" our requirements/feature
assumptions -4:42 PM Jun 20th, 2011
swanwick @rcauvin yes, smart methodology to launch and then measure for possible extension. -4:43 PM Jun 20th,
2011
rcauvin A3: Guidelines for estimating ROI are consistency w/ product theme & level of implementation effort,
primarily. -4:43 PM Jun 20th, 2011
swanwick I blogged a bit about it: http://swanthinks.wordpress.com/2011/02/14/product-development-iterating-by-

buyers/users. -4:46 PM Jun 20th, 2011
zoernert A4: (cont) A method I never use again for proddev is KPIs and BSC-systems .... -4:47 PM Jun 20th, 2011
ProdMgmtTalk @swanwick says "Colors add another dimension of iteration-what to put in & what extent to spend
time to accomplish user need" -4:47 PM Jun 20th, 2011
swanwick @ErikaLAndersen I think all of the above for testing. The more the better as long as you are deriving useful
info. -4:47 PM Jun 20th, 2011
rcauvin @ErikaLAndersen Also test assumptions by putting real product in front of real users & observing/getting
feedback. -4:47 PM Jun 20th, 2011
mhowell @swanwick I have also considered the Kano Model in determining implementation for initial release -4:47
PM Jun 20th, 2011
cindyfsolomon @zoernert so many references to research! "freetext analysis"? -4:49 PM Jun 20th, 2011
swanwick @zoernert "freetext analysis"? -4:49 PM Jun 20th, 2011
mhowell @rcauvin A3: Not all features can be measured by strictly ROI. Example: Brand Recognition -4:49 PM Jun
20th, 2011
swanwick @zoernert How do you use colors? -4:49 PM Jun 20th, 2011
rcauvin @mhowell "return" != money -4:50 PM Jun 20th, 2011
rcauvin @mhowell Brand recognition is a form of return we get from our investment. -4:51 PM Jun 20th, 2011
ProdMgmtTalk @swanwick "splits into green & blue to say even after MVP, for another middle step for more
robust/less backend work" -4:51 PM Jun 20th, 2011

mhowell @rcauvin Brand Recognition can be a difficult concept to measure, especially for small companies -4:53
PM Jun 20th, 2011
cindyfsolomon Apparently a 4 minute lag on twitter search today - hampering quick response times for discussion...
Hang in for @swanwick Q5 -4:54 PM Jun 20th, 2011
zoernert @swanwick #colorsystem is in the way I use it traffic light (blue=red) "timeline" or "status" is the traffic -
4:54 PM Jun 20th, 2011
rcauvin @mhowell Indeed. But #leanstartup has shown that forming measurable assumptions is possible &
important. -4:54 PM Jun 20th, 2011
zoernert @mhowell doesn't Brand Recognition not always be reflected on the top line revenue. Got some nice
German reports showing that. -4:55 PM Jun 20th, 2011
mhowell @ProdMgmtTalk Sorry I'm late =) -4:56 PM Jun 20th, 2011
swanwick @rcauvin lots of ways to gain return that will turn into money down the line that r not money now. Trick is
to measure them. -4:57 PM Jun 20th, 2011

swanwick @zoernert Does red have a negative connotation? -4:59 PM Jun 20th, 2011
zoernert A5: (in regard to: http://bit.ly/kT9mfO ) Key takeaway: It is always a cone in product management -5:00 PM
Jun 20th, 2011
mhowell What if you’re not a startup =) RT @rcauvin: Indeed. But #leanstartup has shown that forming measurable
assumptions is important -5:01 PM Jun 20th, 2011
zoernert @swanwick red is not negative - but has to be not considered in the current agile dev process. -5:02 PM
Jun 20th, 2011
rcauvin @mhowell Some of the same principles still apply in a company that isn't a #leanstartup. -5:02 PM Jun 20th,
