The document discusses plans to expand book club and library services from the secondary school LRC to primary schools. 2. LRC Book Clubs
We are currently setting up a book club for key stage 3/4
students on a Thursday after school once a fortnight.
We will be doing a wide range of activities to do with read-
ing and our students will be involved with choosing books
for the LRC, author visits, helping with the LRC website and
we are also going to enter the North East Teenage Book
Awards from October to January.
We would like to have a Junior Book Club which our older
readers would also help with. It would be held one night a
fortnight after school in our LRC. I would also like to enter
these readers into the North East Junior Book Awards next
year. We would like any year 6 students to join if they have
permission from their parents and can be picked up after the
club meeting.
What we would also like to do from September would be to
start a parent book club where parents from our school and
any primary schools would be welcome to come along, have
refreshments and discuss books & reading.

3. Subject Indexes and Labelling
In our LRC we have Subject Indexes which help students find out where books are in
the LRC. All of our books are classified with the Dewey Decimal Classification System
the same as the public libraries.
This helps students get used to Dewey numbers so they can use any library, whether
it is a public, college or university library.
I have got junior subject indexes which I can provide to primary schools, so students
can get used to library classification numbers from Reception age.
We can also provide free pre-typed Dewey spine labels to add to books in the
classrooms.

If you would like your fiction books to be classified we can provide free author spine
labels and genre stickers.

If any Primary school uses the Accelerated Reading scheme, we can also provide
computerized spine labels for books which clearly show the book colour and interest
levels. We use these as the students find it easier to have the colour and level all on
one label which stands out on the shelves. It also saves money not having to pur-
chase coloured stickers.

6. Topic Boxes
We have over 6,000 non-fiction texts and information books. We
currently provide topic boxes to our subject departments when
needed and buy topic books in if requested by
Heads of Departments.
We would like to offer our primary schools the same service.
All primary schools will be issued with an Eclipse log in number so
all the information books and websites will be accessible to any
teachers who need to use them.
Topic boxes will contain 30 books on the requested subject and a
list of websites relevant to the topic.
All of the websites provided by Eclipse are aimed at students from
Primary/Secondary level. They also provide the link to the actual
page of relevant information to eliminate the need for Google/
Wiki searches.

9. Book Clubs
We currently have the Scholastic book clubs running in the library. We have the C2C
version aimed at 11-16 years and the junior catalogue aimed at Primary students from
Reception level which we find the staff buy from regularly.
We buy our books from two main sources. New Horizons books caters solely for
schools and I have bought from this rep for 15 years. He carries half-price books
regularly and will make visits to any school at any time. The company is very
professional and aims to source any book requested so long as the book is in print, at
the best discount they can give.
We also use Browns Books for Students. This is an Amazon type site which caters to
schools. They carry Accelerated Reader books, cut price published non-fiction, graphic
novels and picture books. They hold almost any DVD cheaper than Amazon or
play.com. We are currently on a Diamond package with them because I have used the
company for a long time. This gives us up to 30% off selected titles. If any Primaries
want to use this site to book buy they will be eligible for the same package and put
onto our status. The company lets you pay through council invoices, online payments
or by cheque and takes no more than 5 days to deliver stock.

10. We would like to try and encourage all primary school children to get
excited about reading from the earliest possible age. On our parents
page of the website we will be reviewing children's picture books
through our book club and posting reading lists for parents to share with
their children.
What we would like to do is set up a storytelling programme for
students in the first 2 years of Primary school. I have been to schools to
do this in the past and have enjoyed it immensely. As well as myself and
our other librarian I would also like to encourage our own students to do
this as well. I feel this would be really enjoyable for some of our
students who are keen readers and would develop their confidence and
speaking skills. Hopefully your students would enjoy this too and get a
lot out of the programme.
