Marie Stopes International has allocated £40,000 to launch a campaign called "Don't play. Protect." targeting Afro-Caribbean teenage women. The campaign aims to promote safe sex and condom use given rising STI rates. It will feature 100 models wearing t-shirts with messages like "I have AIDS" at Piccadilly Circus. The campaign will also use social media and a website including a blog by an HIV-positive woman to raise awareness.

It’s an issue that gets left off the agenda.” says Marama Pala, “Even though Indigenous Peoples experience high rates of HIV and AIDS, it needs to be made visible at all Indigenous conferences and gatherings. It’s time that all Indigenous peoples became aware that we are a marginalised community vulnerable to HIV”

The pace of progress is quickening in Africa. Nowhere have we seen this more clearly than in the AIDS response. Fewer people are dying from AIDS. The number of HIV infections is coming down, with young Africans leading the prevention revolution. There is true hope that in a matter of years, Africa will reach an AIDS-free generation. It has taken a massive shift in how we work together. It has required leaders to show immense courage, passion and action from all sectors. It has taken a united Africa. I am not saying it has been easy— but it has happened. We have a shared vision of zero new HIV infections, zero discrimination and zero AIDS-related deaths.
And today there is an African Union endorsement of a new Roadmap to accelerate progress in HIV, Tuberculosis and Malaria—through shared responsibility and global solidarity. Given the extraordinary history of the AIDS response in Africa—in terms of both galvanizing political support and mobilizing resources and communities—the Roadmap sees AIDS as a pathfinder for tuberculosis, malaria and other diseases affecting the continent that require African-sourced solutions. Leadership, it turns out, was that elusive magic bullet. It is the “disruptive innovation” that has irrevocably changed the course of AIDS and now can do even more. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in 2010, young people ages 13 to 24 years old made up 17% of the US population, but accounted for an estimated 26% (12,200) of all new HIV infections (47,500) in the United States. 1 in 4 new HIV infections occurs in youth ages 13 to 24 years.

The role of the Netherlands includes advocacy, funding, and convening partners to address these challenges through a human rights-based, evidence-driven approach focused on at-risk groups.

The British Museum has received a valuable 14th century Byzantine painting called the "Black George" from the State Historical Museum in Moscow, Russia. The painting depicts St. George and his horse painted black, rather than the traditional white, and will be displayed at the British Museum until July 2010 in an exhibition on Roman and Byzantine icons. The curators from both museums are honored to collaborate on presenting this rare artifact.

Today’s young people are the first generation who has never known a world without HIV and AIDS. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in 2010, young people ages 13 to 24 years old made up 17% of the US population, but accounted for an estimated 26% (12,200) of all new HIV infections (47,500) in the United States. 1 in 4 new HIV infections occurs in youth ages 13 to 24 years.

28 Too Many - Medicalisation of FGM
This document discusses the medicalization of female genital mutilation (FGM), where aspects of the procedure are performed or assisted by medical professionals to reduce immediate health risks, rather than eliminating the practice entirely. World Aids Day
World AIDS Day is observed annually on December 1st. It began in 1988 to raise awareness about AIDS and show support for people living with HIV/AIDS. The theme for 2009 is "Universal Access and Human Rights" to promote equal access to treatment and end discrimination. Over 33 million people currently live with HIV/AIDS, mostly in developing countries, and young people are disproportionately affected.
Aids project
The document discusses the impact of HIV/AIDS on children worldwide. It states that over 2.5 million children under 15 are living with HIV/AIDS globally and 500,000 children died of AIDS in 2003 alone. Children are often infected through mother-to-child transmission or made vulnerable due to poverty, lack of education and sexual exploitation. Ending the AIDS epidemic by 2030?
1) We know who is most vulnerable to HIV infection in different parts of the world, such as young women in southern Africa and sex workers in southern Asia.
2) There are proven prevention and treatment methods available, and prices for diagnostics and medications have decreased while investments have increased.
3) However, criminalization of key populations, gender inequality, lack of youth-friendly services, insufficient funding for prevention, and failure to prioritize key affected groups pose barriers to ending the AIDS epidemic by 2030 as envisioned. The role of the Netherlands includes advocacy, funding, and convening partners to address these challenges through a human rights-based, evidence-driven approach focused on at-risk groups.

Running from 13th January 2010, ‘Don’t play. Protect.’ will urge sexually active Afro-Caribbean teenage women under 21 to make condoms essential wear when they are out on the "pull". The move coincides with the publication of the latest figures from the Public Health Protection Report, which show that the UK is facing increasing rates of sexually transmitted diseases among this target group. Rates of gonorrhoea and chlamydia are about ten times higher in black Caribbeans and the Afro-Caribbean community has seen a six-fold increase in the HIV-rate since 1995. The campaign will be launched this Wednesday at London’s Piccadilly Circus. Altogether 100 Afro-Caribbean models will mingle with the pedestrians and cause a sensation by wearing pink t-shirts with striking messages imprinted (i.e. “I have AIDS.”). A URL on the back of the t-shirts will shed light on the action. After this first big outing, the campaign will continue to be promoted through Facebook, Twitter, My Space and via a dedicated campaign website: www.dont-play-protect.co.uk. One part of the homepage is a blog of Marvelyn Brown, a 24-year-old AIDS-infected Afro-Caribbean woman, who openly talks about her restricted life with this infection. 1
