A2 prelim
+
What we had to do
 For our prelim we look at the negative representations and
ideological beliefs associated with the working class.
 We also studies arrange of audience reception theories so that
we could apply them to the film pride,
 We then produce a critic of the film pride. We had to record and
edit the radio show ourselves.
+
Codes and conventions of radio
 When producing a radio show the show has to have an intro
that fades in and the same score that fades out after.
 A radio show need to have a clip of the text that the expert is
analyzing.
 There needs to be both an expert and and interviewer who runs
the segment.
 The presenters need to have strong opinions and to use
expressive voices to make it interesting.
+
Mediation
 One of the subtopics we looked at before starting the radio
show project was mediation.
 We learnt that mediation is the process of changing an
apearance of a product in order to create meaning.
 This will be relevant to us for our A2 course as we will all
become mediators when creating the representations of the
group we are studying for our documentary.
+
Working class
 After studying how a meaning is created we look at what type
of meaning is being created by the media when they present to
us working class character. We came up with some
stereotypical attributes of a working class character :
 Violent
 Lazy
 Uneducated
 Uncultured
 Socially behind
+
Audience reception theory
 For our prelim we had to consider if the viewers really believed
these negative ideologies that where coded in to the shows they
watched or weather they rejected these representations.
 The two theories we found were the active and passive audience
theory. The active theory says we challenge the coded message
presented to us where as the passive says we expect what we are
shown.
 Many different critics we research and different ideas or views on
and about the theories e.g.:
 Friske suggested many viewers reject the ideologies
 Researchers a the Frankfurt school theorised the media controls
our behaviour by giving us these ideologies so that we will believe
them and live by them.
+
Questions we have to ask when
analysing a representation.
 What or who is being represented?
 Does the representation conform to stereotypes?
 What is the representaions effect?
 Who created the representation?
 How was it created?
 Why was it created in this way?
+
How we talked about social class in
our radio show
 In our radio show we discussed how the lower classes are
represented in the media in a negative light.
 In pride however we saw some of the stereotypes subverts,
though the use of dinamic characters. Like Bill Nighys character,
who was very lingistic and was shown as intelligent despite of his
class.
 In the film the working class where shown as being a tight nit
community that because more caring though out the course of the
plot this shows how the working class are not as violent and
disorderly as hegemonic values paint them to be.
 There was however still a negative representations like the violent
strikers, this is probably because the film was made by upper
class directors who only have stereotypes to work off.
+
What skills we learnt
 During the course of project I learnt how to product a edit a
script
 How to record on hand held recording devices
 How to edit the sound levels on garage band
 we learnt how to cut sound files on garage band and quick
time.
 How to up load sound files to garage band
 How to navigate though the app folder
 We also earn how to upload to sound cloud
+
how this will help with as
 The skills we learnt in this project will help us in our second
year as we will have to produce a radio advert to go along size
our article and documentary.
 We will also have to bring in more theory like the audience
reception theory in to our essays and exam.
+
As course work products we need to
produce
 Documentary
 Radio advert
 Magazine article/review
