INTRODUCTION OF FMCG INDUSTRY
❏ The FMCG industry is the fourth largest sector
in the Indian economy. Household and personal
care products accounts for 50% of the sales in
the industry, healthcare accounts for 31-32%
and food and beverage accounts for the
remaining 18-19%.
❏ Businesses that provide FMCGs to rural
communities can help create jobs and reduce
the cost of such items in those communities.
For example, FMCGs are the fourth-largest
industry in the Indian economy, employing
over three million people in downstream
operations.
HISTORY OR PAST POSITION OF
FMCG
❏ Evolution Between 195 and 1980, there was limited
investment in the FMCG Sector. Local people had
lower purchasing power, which meant that people
opted for necessity products rather than premium
products. Indian government was inclined towards
favoring the local shops and retailers.
❏ The Fast-Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) industry is
mainly responsible for producing, distributing and
marketing fast-moving consumer goods. The FMCG
industry is the fourth largest sector in the Indian
economy. Household and personal care products
accounts for 50% of the sales in the industry,
healthcare accounts for 31-32% and food and beverage
accounts for the remaining 18-19%/.
PRESENT POSITION OF FMCG
❏ The Fast-Moving Consumers Goods (FMCG) industry
represents one of the largest industry worldwide. As per the
study, the FMCG industry is well positioned to registered a
growth of $310. 5 billion between 2022 and 2026, primarily
driven by the rising consumption of ready-to-eat foods
products.
❏ In fact, by 2025, the total consumer spending on food is
expected to touch around 8.85 trillion U.S dollars
additionally, increasing awareness among the consumer and
expansion of organized retailing will also be catapulting the
demand gradient over the next few years.
❏ To put things into perspective, one of the major factors
steering the growth of the global FMCG market is the
increase population.
FUTURE POSITION OF FMCG
❏ However, the FMCG sector has not been alien to its own
share of challenges. Even before the pandemic struck, the
middle-east encountered a decline in oil prices,
geopolitical volatility, and accelerated evolution of digital
technology. Apart from that, consumers have also become
less loyal to specific brands, and their needs, wants,
demands, and aspirations have also undergone sea
changes.
❏ More and more consumers today are seeking convenience,
healthier options, and organic locally sourced produce. In
fact, this push for convenience had led to the stellar rise of
eCommerce. Brands are investing robustly in digital
analytics and many believe that the retail industry is
currently the most fertile ground for digital change among
all other consumer industries.
REVENUE OF FMCG INDUSTRY
❏ The fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) sector's revenue is expected to double from last year to
10-12% this fiscal, rating firm Crisil said in a research note.
❏ Crisil analysed 57 Crisil-rated FMCG companies. These companies represent close to one-third of
the sectoral revenues of ₹4.2 lakh crore (FY21).
❏ The Indian economy has recovered to pre-pandemic levels, with real GDP growth in FY 2021-22 at
8.2%, 1% higher than in FY 2019-20. Fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) sales are fueling economic
expansion, as they increased by 16% in 2021, driving a nine-year high in consumption-led growth.
❏ In 2020, India's FMCG market generated revenue of about 110 billion U.S. dollars, a significant
increase from the previous year. The online FMCG market was estimated to rise up to 45 million
dollars in financial year 2020.
