Signage must be posted with Emergency Response contact information for the site in a visible location to anyone dispensing or
delivering fuel. It needs to identify the location of fire extinguishers (unless emergency sign is posted next to the fire
extinguisher) and any emergency shutoff switches. On a site visit if the signage requirement is not met the inspector may
issue a Notice of Non-Compliance. (NONC) Below is a signage example:

While fuel flow from dispensers should be stopped using the Emergency
Shut-off switch, it is also a good idea to shut off power to the UST system
from circuit breakers at the facility’s main electrical panel.
• Make sure circuit breakers are labeled correctly
• Only attempt to shut off circuit breakers if it is safe to enter the building

amount , which is any amount of petroleum that
immediately evaporates or is specified by the
department or delegated agency through guidance
documents.

Try to contain the spill immediately. NEVER WASH DOWN SPILL AREA OR
DISPENSER ISLAND WITH WATER

a dam with absorbent pads or cat litter. Place absorbent material in front of
and on top of the spill
 Spills that do come in contact with soil, groundwater, or surface water need
to be reported to ECY

Small Spill Preparedness Kit Guide.
Recommended Items.
 Plastic bucket with threaded lid for easy removal marked SPILL KIT.
 5x7 Emergency Card (laminated and attached to the inside of the bucket
lid) with spill directions. The information on the card should contain. 911
and emergency numbers, your companies name, address, phone number.
It should contain instructions on informing senior or trained staff of
the spill.
 It should contain information on where to shut off the flow of fuel etc.
 Gloves , rubber boots, eye protection for handling non hazardous
materials.
 A dozen or more absorbent pads
 Loose absorbent material, caution cones, safety vest, broom, dust pan.

 Wear proper safety equipment (safety
glasses, nitrile gloves, safety vest).
 PUT USED ABSORBENT MATERIALS IN
PROPERLY LABELED HAZARDOUS
WASTE DRUMS.
 PUT IN SOLID-WASTE DRUMS, NOT IN LIQUID-WASTE
DRUMS.
 NEVER PLACE USED ABSORBENT MATERIALS IN TRASH
DUMPSTER OR RECYCLING CONTAINER.
 Report spill to facility owner, manager, and should be
reported to ERTS.
 Document spill information in store spill log.

11. Major SpillResponse
A major spill is above a de minimis amount and/or
enters a storm drain
