Foam Team Training Series “ Husky 60 Foam System”
Introduction The Husky 60 Foam Proportioning system is a demand system using a balanced pressure principal. This means that the foam concentrate pressure is automatically regulated to be equal to the water pressure by controlling the foam proportional output. Each output that is foam capable has its own proportioner.
Introduction The foam concentrate is pulled from the foam tank by the foam pump and discharged to the metering valve that has been activated. The automatic system is maintained by the output of the hydrostatic pump which is run directly off of the water pump.
Important Numbers The MAX pressure for this system is 250 psi. Being a Husky 60 means that this Foam concentrate pump will have a max output of 60 gallons per min. (Foam concentrate)
3% Operation At 3% operation: We can flow 2000* total gpm: 1940 gpm of water 60 gpm of foam concentrate *E-1 is only rated at 1750, however you might get close to 2000 based on previous pump tests with a good water supply.
6% Operation At 6% Operation: 1000 gpm 940 gpm water 60 gpm foam concentrate
Compatibility The Husky Foam system is compatible with all known Class B and Class A foam concentrates but it should not be mixed without thoroughly cleaning out the system.
Manual Override Selector Valve This valve should normally be set to auto This two function valve determines the operating mode of the proportioning system. Automatic – System will automatically balance foam concentrate pressure to water pressure Manual – System will respond to operator adjustment of the manual control valve
Manual Override Control Valve Normally backed out to zero (Fully counter-clockwise) This is only operational when the selector valve is in manual mode. Manual operation of this valve determines the pressure of the foam concentrate pump.
Foam Concentrate Tank The foam tank is designed to store all types of foam concentrate. Design features typically include: 1” drain valve Expansion dome with a locking fill hatch and pressure vacuum vent The dome allows for changes in atmospheric pressure and temperature
Foam Concentrate Tank Foam tank levels must be maintained at the half-full mark in the expansion dome at all times to reduce the air to foam interaction The pressure vacuum vent helps to regulate the atmospheric pressures during normal, suction and filling operations.
Foam Concentrate Tank Shut-Off This valve should always be off unless calling for foam concentrate
Foam Concentrate Pump The foam concentrate pump is a positive displacement rotary gear self-priming pump driven by the water pump. The foam concentrate pump is operational only when the water pump is engaged. The pump can be stored “dry” or “wet”
Duplex Pressure Gauge Located on the pump panel, the gauge indicates the foam concentrate pressure (red needle) and the water pressure (black needle) simultaneously. When both needles indicate the same pressure then the system is balanced and functioning normally.
External Foam Pick-up Connection A quarter turn ball valve is located on the pump panel to pick-up additional foam concentrate as needed.
Normal Standby Mode Manual override selector – automatic On/Off selector – Off Tank B Control Valve – Closed Metering/Shutoff Valves – Closed Manual Override Control valve – Zero (Fully counter-clockwise)
Normal Foam Operation Manual override selector – automatic On/Off selector – On Tank B Control Valve – Open Metering/Shutoff Valves – Desired % Manual Override Control valve - Zero
Foam Tank Filling Instructions Park the vehicle on a level surface When filling manually into the expansion dome hatch, use a fill tube that can reach down to the bottom of the tank to prevent any aeration. Pour the concentrate down the center of the round fill tube, this tube allows the concentrate to fill beneath the surface of the foam to reduce aeration.
Filling using the foam pump Connect the external foam pickup tube to the external foam supply Open the ball valve Place the Manual override selector valve in the manual position Ensure that the pressure regulating valve is fully backed out Engage the water pump
Filling using the foam pump Adjust the foam pump speed using the pressure regulator valve Slowly partially open the foam tank fill valve Have a spotter on top watching the fill dome as it fills. DO NOT fill too fast, and when concentrate starts to enter the dome stop the fill procedure.
Filling using the foam pump When the tank is full, turn the pressure regulation valve fully out (counter-clockwise) Place the manual override selector valve back into the automatic position. Disengage the water pump.
Starting a Foam Operation Connect to a water supply Place the desired foam tank selector switch in the open position Turn the foam system on Open the metering shutoff valve where foam is desired, turning the selector past the desired setting and then back. Increase engine speed to desired pressure.
Stopping Foam Operations Close the metering valves Decrease engine speed/pressure Turn the system off Allow the lines to continue to flow until they run clear. Close the foam concentrate supply valves to the foam pump Open the minor flush and discharge flush valves to flush out the downstream side of the metering valves
Stopping Foam Operations Refill the foam concentrate storage tank to the one-half full level in the expansion dome. Return all valves and switches to their normal stand-by positions
Manual Mode Should the auto-balancing system fail take the following steps: Turn the Husky manual override selector valve to the manual position Set the pump discharge to the desired pressure Open the desired metering valve to the required percentage
Manual Mode Increase the foam concentrate pressure by rotating the manual override control knob clock-wise until the red and black needle align As additional lines are opened, the manual override may have to be adjusted to maintain the proper balance
Foam Operation from an external source Locate the supply near the pump panel ensuring that you have sufficient quantity to not run the pump dry Connect the pick up tube and insert into the foam supply Open the external concentrate valve Turn the foam tank selector off Ensure the foam tank fill valve is closed
Foam Operation from an external source If foam was not flowing using the onboard tank reverse 3 and 4 If cavitation of the foam pump occurs, open the foam pump drain valve to evacuate the air, allow the pump to prime then close the valve.
Periodic Operation The foam pump should be operated on a routine basis to ensure the system is ready to go The two acceptable methods of operating the foam pump is: Actual foam operation utilizing normal flow procedures Operating in manual mode with all metering valves closed
Periodic Operation Manual mode testing Place the pump in gear Switch the manual override selector valve into manual mode Verify that the foam concentrate tank supply valve for the primary agent is open With all metering valves closed make sure the Husky is OFF Slowly increase the foam pressure to about 50 psi as shown on the red needle using the manual override control valve
Periodic Operation Allow the system to run for no longer than 40 seconds De activate the Husky system, shutdown the water pump and truck returning the manual override selector to their normal standby position
