Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan U.T. Chandigarh
Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) is a flagship Programme of
Govt. Of India launched in 2001 to fulfill the constitutional
commitment of providing elementary education of satisfactory
quality to every child of 6 to 14 years of age by 2010 in
partnership with states. Programme aims at achieving
Universilization of Elementary Education (UEE) by providing
access to school to every child within one K.M. of a ‘child’
residence, create alternative educational facilities for hard to
reach groups and ensure that no child drops out without attaining
elementary education.

For achieving UEE the perspective plan of Chandigarh U.T
had proposed to cover all unschooled children by (i) Opening New
Schools (ii) creating Additional capacity in existing schools. (iii)
Improving school infrastructure and teaching learning environment
for enrolment and retention. (iv) Opening of Alternative Innovative
Education (AIE) centres to serve as preparatory schools for
mainstreaming. Chandigarh U.T. has implemented SSA
programme in 2003-2004. A brief of the progress made through
various interventions under SSA from 2004-05 to 2006-07 is
submitted as under.

Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan,

 All children complete five years of primary schooling
by 2007.
 All children complete eight years of elementary
schooling by 2010.
 Focus on elementary education of satisfactory
quality with emphasis on education for life.
 Bridge all gender and social category gaps at
primary stage by 2007 and at elementary education
level by 2010.

Special Incentives under SSA
• Free text books to all girl students upto 8th class
(32000 girls benefited).
• Extra coaching classes for educationally weak
students (3000 children enrolled).
• Vocational skill courses for livelihood- 20 skill
courses. (Children benefited : 1700)
• Opening of 277 Alternative Education centres for
the education of out of school children (benefited
10040 children).

Computer Education for all children.
Children with special needs identified for
giving free of cost spectacles, hearing aids
spectacles and wheel chairs etc. to enable
these children to continue their education in
schools.
Teacher grants given to all teachers for
improving teaching learning processes.

Enrollment Drives (Dakhila Abhiyan)
In the month of April, 2008 rallies were taken
out to generate awareness among masses to
enroll out of school children in the formal school
or in A.I.E. Centres.

Van Mahotsava Celebration
Children of all AIE Centres of
Cluster No. 8, 11, 15 and 18 celebrated
Van Mahotsava by planting saplings in
the school premises. The activity was
carried to sensitize the children about
their surroundings and to develop love
for their environment

Celebration of Independence Day.
It was an experience to watch children of
AIE centres participating with formal students on
15th August. They presented colorful
programmes including patriotic group songs,
dances, skits, poems etc. prabhat pheries and
rallies were also taken out by children community
teachers, community volunteers in the
supervision of their respective CRC’s. Patriotic
movies shows were also organized for these
children

Teachers’ Day
Children of AIE Centres following under
Cluster no. 5,8,9,10,12,13,15,20 were
involved in making this memorable for their
teachers they danced, sang and presented
hand made greeting cards to their teacher
to express their gratitude with small
gestures.

Excursions.
Two exposure visits were arranged
for all AIE Centre students. These
children were taken to nearby parks,
gardens, zoo, art galleries & museums.

Health and Hygiene.
To maintain health and hygiene, hygiene kits
(containing comb, towel, soap, lice shampoo,
tooth paste/manjan, nail cutter etc.) were
provided to every AIE Centre students,
Community Volunteer constantly monitor the
hygienic habits of the children.

Involvement in SSA, Mission (2007-08)
• Meetings with Area Councilors:- To
discuss some sensitive issued meeting with
area councilors was held in the month of
April, July and August 2007 at Govt. Primary
School-Maloya, GSSS-20 and GSSS-MMT.
In this meeting issues like maintenance of
school and cleanliness of school ground,
support of community in SSA implementation
and functioning of AIE Centres were
discussed.

Cluster Level Training to VEC:- In the
month of March, 2008 for capacity building of
VEC members, a 2 days cluster level training
was organized to discuss the various issues
like, quality, retention, enrollment, utilization of
funds/grants, released under SSA. During this
training VEC members were appraised with
the progress made during the session in the
field of quality, infrastructure, mid-day meal
etc. Their suggestions for further
improvements were also invited.
