Macbeth and Banquo defeat invading armies for King Duncan. They meet witches who prophesize Macbeth will be king. When Duncan names Macbeth Thane of Cawdor, fulfilling one prophecy, Macbeth's ambition grows. Lady Macbeth convinces Macbeth to kill Duncan, which he does. Macbeth becomes king but grows increasingly paranoid. He arranges to have Banquo and his son killed but Fleance escapes. Macbeth sees Banquo's ghost and becomes more tyrannical, while rebels begin to oppose his rule.
