2. ABOUT SBI (STATE BANK OF INDIA)
• Founded in 1806.
• India’s largest and oldest commercial bank.
• Over 9000 branches , 205000 employees in over 32
countries.
• It is a public sector financial institution and
multinational company.
• Headquartered in Mumbai, Maharashtra.
• Government owned corporation and has 60% stake.
3. Information system is an –
Integrated set of components for- collecting,
storing, processing and providing information.
Business firms and other organizations use
them to carry out operations, interact with
customers, compete with marketplace.
Comprises of Six major components which come
up to produce IS that are hardware, software,
data, procedures, people, and feedback.

4. SBI CORE SYSTEM MODERNIZATION-
In 2002, SBI started the implementation of a new centralized core banking system
and selected TCS BANCS developed by TCS to implement the new core system.
Objectives for modernization-
• The delivery of new product to all customers, including those in rural areas.
• Provision of a single customer view of all accounts.
• The ability to merge the affiliate banks into SBI.
• Support for all SBI existing products.
• Reduce customer waiting time in branches.
CHALLENGES FACED BY SBI
1. Finding a new core system.
2. Bank lacked experience.
3. Meeting SBI's unique product requirements. The products include gold deposits (by
weight), savings accounts with overdraft privileges, and an extraordinary number of
passbook savings accounts.

5. ABOUT TCS BANCS
SBI does not use an ERP but uses a core banking product called
BANCS implemented by TCS. SBI selected TCS BANCS to
customize the software, provide ongoing operational support for
its centralized information technology.
The Bancs system is based on service oriented architecture(SOA)
and is platform and database independent.
It includes functions for universal banking, core banking,
payments, wealth management, forex and money markets,
compliance, insurance, securities processing, custody, financial
inclusion, Islamic banking and treasury operations.
TATA CONSULTANCY SERVICES DEVELEOPED TCS BANCS. TCS has
been a leader in core system integration services for bank.
6. BENEFITS OF IMPLEMENTING THE
INFORMATION SYSTEM
The new core banking system has allowed the bank to redesign processes.
The bank’s business per employee ratio increased by 250% over the last five
years and workload over the employee has decreased.
The bank has achieved its goal by offering its full range of products and services
(like NEFT and RTGS) to its rural branches. This results in economic growth to the
rural areas and offers financial inclusion for all of India’s citizens.
Implementation of the TCS BaNCS system has provided the bank with the ability
to consolidate the affiliate bank into SBI.
SBI offered a new range of services like Net Banking, Mobile Banking, E-Challan,
ATM service, etc to their customers.

SBI Offers 2 products ensuring efficient management ,
sustainable growth.
• Electronic Vendor Financing Scheme (e-VFS)-An
application for all customers who require a vendor
discount scheme and enjoy vendor financing limits
with SBI and provides guarantee service through
Instant Interest Recovery Process and Auto Debit of
Reversal, which reduces hassles of the bank in
recovering the finance.
• Electronic Dealer Financing Scheme (e-DFS)- An
application that aims to automate the loan disbursal
and interest recovery process and provides a
repayment model through the Internet banking and
other channel system. The application is
customizable for all customers who require a Dealer
Discount Scheme and enjoy dealer financing limits
with State Bank of India.
• Benefits to buyer, seller and bank.
8. SECURITY
AND
PRIVACY
SBI does not use cookies on its website.
Follows best security practices to help
prevent unauthorized access to confidential
information about the customers.
Restricts the disclosure of customer
information except when directed by law.
Keep the customer information accurate.
Information provided by the customers to
the bank on its website remains encrypted
in order to secure information.
The employees are held accountable if they
violate the privacy policy.
9. CONCLUSION
The implementation of the Tata Consultancy Services (TCS)
Bancs system at the State Bank of India (SBI) represents the
largest core systems project ever undertaken. The success of
this project should encourage other large banks to begin
projects to modernize their core systems. SBI’s achievement
demonstrates that attention to critical factors is crucial in
implementing new core systems. The bank’s senior
management commitment, business line involvement,
project team staffing and empowerment, and extensive
employee training were all key contributors to the success of
the project.
