Directed by James Whale in 1931, Frankenstein tells the story of obsessed scientist Henry Frankenstein who stitches together body parts from the dead to create new life. With the help of his assistant Fritz, Frankenstein's creation comes to life after being struck by lightning. However, the creature becomes a problem for the townsfolk. The 1931 film uses heavy contrasts between black and white to set a gothic, horror tone. Scenes feature scientific equipment and restraints on tables, conveying the creature as a threat. The aftermath of a struggle is shown with a lady in white lying dead on a bed, as the haunting creature stands over her with a hand on the glass.
