Project Ara is an initiative by Google to develop a modular smartphone where users can upgrade and replace individual components like the camera, battery, and processor. The project envisions consumers assembling phones by purchasing blocks for different functions that connect together. While this would allow for frequent upgrades and cheaper repairs, challenges remain around the weight and reliability of the connectors between blocks, as well as attracting manufacturers and consumer preference for existing smartphones.
