Hitler used the Hitler Youth organization to harass Jews and required all non-Jewish German children ages 10 to 18 to join propaganda organizations. Josef Goebbels, who was barely 5 feet tall and hated Jews, was put in charge of propaganda by Hitler. On Kristallnacht in 1938, Nazis and Germans attacked Jewish homes and businesses, smashing furniture and burning personal belongings in the streets. Nearly every synagogue in Germany was damaged or burned. German officers handed rocks to children and instructed them to break windows of synagogues. Not all Germans accepted the Nazi lies about Jews, but those who helped Jews faced severe punishment. Hitler broke his promise made in Munich in 1938 not to invade other lands when he invaded Poland
