Agriculture in India faces many crises that threaten its viability. Approximately 56.6% of Indians are employed in agriculture but it only contributes 18% to India's GDP. The increased costs of cultivation along with inadequate irrigation, drought, and crop failures have led to farmer debt and lack of viability. Illiteracy in 30% of small farmers and environmental degradation limiting resources further exacerbate the issues. Farmer suicides account for 11.2% of all suicides in India due to debt, crop failures, and stress. To solve the agricultural crisis, India must boost farmer incomes, generate rural employment, reduce agricultural risks, improve infrastructure and quality of life.
