- #1 Welcome, my name is_________________________. I am pleased to be here to share my experience as a turnitin user and some basic of this Digital Assessment Tool. Turnitin Originality Check is a Web-based utility available at Turnitin.com. This tool provides instructors with a way to insure the academic integrity of students’ work. PU has the license of Turnitin Originality Check for teachers. This University service is provided by PUL through HEC. All the teachers have to get username and passwords to PUL. This presentation provides an overview of Turnitin Originality Check as it may be used at PU.

- #3 Turnitin Originality Check provides a tool through which students’ work may be electronically submitted to verify academic integrity. Originality Check checks students’ work for originality by comparing submitted papers to multiple sources. An Originality Report is generated to provide an analysis of the compared text. Any portion of a student’s paper that matches any of the sources in Turnitin’s repositories is indicated in this analysis with a side-by-side comparison. Reports may be accessed by instructors and students, as permitted, and can be printed as needed. Instructors can use reported matching text to discuss proper citation usage with students and prevent potential plagiarism.
- #4 In an instructional situation, Turnitin Originality Check provides several benefits. This tool helps prevent plagiarism by holding students accountable for correctly citing their sources. Text found in students’ papers that matches text in the Turnitin repositories is color coded in an Originality Report. This report provides efficient verification of citations and a time-saving way to investigate student originality, as well as documentation of potential plagiarism. Matching text documented in the Originality Report can also be reviewed by both instructors and students to evaluate citation methods which can provide a learning opportunity that encourages more accurate citation creation. - #5 What is Turnitin? Many of you know us at a plagiarism prevention system. However, we are much more than that. Turnitin is a digital assessment tool that addresses the entire lifecycle of a student paper: Because a paper is submitted to our service, a digital copy of the paper is created, The submission can then be checked for originality. All of the papers can then be peer reviewed electronically (making it safe and efficient way to include collaborative learning in your classroom) Then the paper can be graded with insertion of digital text box comments and rubrics And entered into a gradebook Our class management tools, along with all of the Turnitin service modules, offers an instructor a complete web-based class management solution.
- #6 I will now get you started. I will be taking you though these 4 steps: It is important to know that the reason there are 4 steps is that we wanted to make it possible to have students submit papers directly to you (saving you time!). This set up only takes a few minutes and then will not have to be done again. We will start by 1) Creating a user profile 2) Using our wizard to create classes and assignments 3) Logging into your Turnitin home page (to add more classes or to set preferences) 4) And showing you how to submit a paper and how your students can submit papers. - #7 What does Turnitin Search? 1) First, it searches a current copy and an archived copy of the publicly accessible Internet (more than 5 billion pages indexed so far). Our web crawler technology allows for a more directed search for new and updated text (so that it does not waste time downloading material that educators are not interested in). The archived copy addresses the issue of web sites that disappear over time. 2) In addition to Internet text, Turnitin searches millions of published works including scholarly journals and newspapers. We are the only service to include data of this kind that provides searches to a vast array of private periodicals, journals, and publications. 3) Most importantly, our search area includes millions of student papers submitted to Turnitin since 1996. This means that we have the largest database of previously submitted work. This is also the only way to combat two forms of plagiarism: 1) the use of the for-pay-cheat-site papers that students can buy and download and 2) internal sharing of original work between students in the same classes. In addition, IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO NOTE: that a previously submitted paper match does not show any identifying information or any of the actual paper from the previous student. We follow FERPA and COPPA student privacy policies. You do get a communication box that appears so you can e-mail the faculty member who received this paper to follow up from a teacher to teacher perspective. I will show your this in a minute.
