ORAL PRESENTATION Information Technology,Interpersonal, and Leadership Competencies of 21st Century Filipino Librarians and Their Impact on Academic Library Services.

Editor's Notes

  • #1 Good day, everyone! Thank you for joining me today. My presentation will explore the competencies of 21st-century Filipino librarians, specifically focusing on their information technology, interpersonal, and leadership skills, and how these competencies impact their service delivery in academic libraries. We will go into the findings of my research study that gives light on the strengths and areas for development in these key areas. And now, please allow me to begin.
  • #2 Before we start into the research findings, allow me to briefly introduce myself. My name is Geselle Mae J. Fernandez, and I am currently pursuing my Master of Arts in Education, with a specialization in Library and Information Science, at the National Teachers College. My passion lies in advancing the field of library science, particularly through understanding and enhancing the competencies of librarians in today’s ever-evolving academic environment.
  • #3 In this, we examine the findings on Filipino librarians' competencies in three critical areas: Information Technology, Interpersonal, and Leadership skills. Information Technology Competence received a very high rating, with a mean of 4.49. Librarians are proficient in using digital tools, providing research support, and keeping up with technological updates. However, there is room for improvement in streamlining cataloging systems and troubleshooting technical issues. Interpersonal Competence was rated even higher, with a mean of 4.75. Librarians excel in guiding patrons, managing conflicts, and providing personalized assistance. Areas for growth include enhancing communication skills and fostering better team collaboration. Leadership Competence earned a rating of 4.56. Librarians demonstrate strong leadership in adhering to policies and focusing on staff development. However, there are opportunities for growth in delegating tasks and planning programs effectively.
  • #4 This findings highlights the impact of competencies on library service delivery. Let’s look at each area: IT Competencies had a very high impact on service delivery, with a mean of 4.79. Librarians’ ability to stay current with tech trends and solve technical problems is vital for efficient library operations. Areas for improvement include utilizing digital tools more effectively and organizing resources through technology. Interpersonal Competencies also had a significant impact, with the same rating of 4.79. Effective communication, teamwork, and patron guidance were highlighted as strengths. The opportunity here lies in improving active listening and conflict management to enhance user experience. Leadership Competencies were equally impactful with a rating of 4.79. The ability to adhere to policies, plan programs, and develop staff is essential. However, librarians can further enhance service delivery by focusing on task delegation and proposing innovative ideas.
  • #5 Now, let’s explore the relationship between the competencies and library service delivery. IT Competencies show a significant positive relationship (r=0.68) with library service delivery, underscoring the crucial role of technology in modern libraries. Interpersonal Competencies exhibit a strong correlation (r=0.78) with service delivery, emphasizing that human interactions are just as critical to library success. Leadership Competencies also show a strong correlation (r=0.74), highlighting how leadership drives effective library management and staff performance.
  • #6 In terms of specific competency relationships: IT Competencies have a moderate but significant correlation (r=0.65) with overall library service delivery. However, the relationship with interpersonal (r=0.50) and leadership competencies (r=0.13) is less significant. Interpersonal Competencies have a very strong relationship (r=0.84) with leadership and overall competencies. These skills are fundamental in improving library service. Leadership Competencies show a strong correlation (r=0.83) with overall competencies and interpersonal skills, but their connection to IT competencies is weake.
  • #7 To conclude, Filipino librarians exhibit very high competencies in all three areas: information technology, interpersonal relations, and leadership. These skills are vital for the effective functioning of modern academic libraries. The key takeaways: Interpersonal and leadership skills have the most significant impact on service delivery. Information technology is equally important but requires continuous enhancement for better library management. Librarians demonstrate excellent proficiency in using technology and assisting patrons, integrating technical, relational, and leadership skills for exceptional service.
  • #8 Based on these findings, I propose the following recommendations to further enhance the competencies of Filipino librarians: Training: Libraries should offer continuous training to keep librarians updated with emerging technologies and trends to improve digital tool usage. Leadership Development: There should be a focus on improving task delegation, strategic planning, and leadership skills to strengthen the overall service delivery. Collaboration: Promoting clearer task allocation and fostering team-building activities will enhance teamwork, which is crucial for high-quality service.
  • #12 Thank you for your attention. The competencies of Filipino librarians are essential for the continued success and growth of academic libraries. I hope this presentation has provided insights into how librarians are adapting and excelling in the 21st century. I am now open for any questions you may have.
