Afghanistan- my homeland
THE ISLAMIC REPUBLIC OF AFGHANISTAN
 The Islamic Republic of Afghanistan is a country located
within South Asia and Central Asia. Afghanistan is bordered
by Pakistan in the south and east; Iran in the west;
Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan in the north; and in
the far northeast, China and the Pakistan. Its territory is
652,000 square kilometers and much of it is covered by the
Hindu Kush mountain range, with very cold winters. The
north consists of fertile plains.
 Kabul is the capital and its largest city.
 Pashto and Dari are the official languages of
Afghanistan.
RELIGION
 People in Afghanistan are Muslim. People go to pray at
mosques. Women pray at home and they have to wear
scarves when they go out. People pray five times a
day: at 5 o’clock, 11:30, 2:30, 5:30 and at 7 or 8
o’clock. People don’t eat pork. In some societies certain
foods are taboo, for example dogs in Europe, cows in
India and pork in Afghanistan. Pork is forbidden by the
Islamic laws and regarded as impure, unhealthy and
harmful for humans. People don’t eat pork and if a pig
touches our clothes we have to change immediately
and put it in the garbage and don’t touch it again.
HOLIDAYS IN AFGHANISTAN
 Eid e Fitr marks the end of Ramadan. During this
celebration people pray collectively in mosques and gather
with relatives and friends to enjoy the feast.
 Eid e Qurban falls between December and February of the
Afghan calendar during which animals like goats, camels, or
sheep are sacrificed to mark the start of Muslim pilgrimage.
EDUCATION
 Children start school at the age of 4 or 5 and study for 12
years in primary and secondary school and then go to a
faculty. There are about 25 pupils in a class. The school
subjects are similar as in Serbia and lessons about Islam.
The boys and girls go to separate classrooms. The boys
have wear blue uniforms. The girls have to wear white
scarves and black uniforms.
FOOD
 Typical Afghan food includes: Mantoo, Shami kebab, Quabul
Pulao Rice, Ashak, Burger, Afghan rice and lamb, Afghani
Ice Cream, Shezakh, Baklava.
