The document discusses the NTCA's Smart Rural Community Initiative which aims to recognize and build communities that utilize broadband technologies. It outlines the challenges rural areas face in healthcare, education, and other areas due to lack of resources and their disconnect from urban areas. The initiative works with third-party organizations and convened a summit to develop the concept of a Smart Rural Community, defined as one that uses broadband to support applications in education, healthcare, utilities, public safety, agriculture, and economic development. It highlights real-world examples and outlines additional applications such as smart grid technologies. The initiative also recognizes high-performing communities through a showcase program and seeks to build more pilot smart rural communities going forward.

Herefordshire Council implemented a Signposting Project to better connect vulnerable people with social services through a centralized referral process. The project used customer data segmentation and GIS mapping to predict service needs. An e-referral system was added to streamline referrals. The goals were to improve data sharing, anticipate customer needs, and measure outcomes like reduced A&E visits and increased service uptake. Lessons included allowing extra time, maintaining partnerships, and expanding scope when possible.

Lga local transparency roadshow 2014 value of local open dataGesche Schmid
Local transparency and open data can provide significant benefits to local governments and communities. It fosters greater accountability, democracy and engagement through ready access and use of open data. This can innovate and transform local public services, empower citizens and groups, and support economic growth. While the pace of transition varies locally, the overall approach is moving from closed to open by default.

This was a session on health in spatial planning delivered for a Local Government Association and Association of Directors of Public Health Policy Workshop
This document summarizes a presentation about using local census data to conduct neighborhood-level research in Canada. It discusses two examples: a pilot atlas of homelessness risk that mapped census data at the neighborhood level for three cities, and the Community Social Data Strategy, which provides municipalities and non-profits access to census and other data to understand social trends in their communities. The presentation argues that neighborhood-level research is important but difficult due to limitations of available data sources and organizational mandates. It shows examples of how the atlas and data strategy projects have overcome these challenges to map indicators like income, housing, and donations at small geographic levels.
The document is Parramatta City Council's Homelessness Policy from 2011. The 3 sentence summary is:
The policy recognizes that access to housing is essential for an inclusive city. It notes that homelessness is growing in the local area and outlines challenges including increasing rates of homelessness. The policy's objectives are to prevent homelessness, support local homelessness services, promote public spaces for all, and champion regional partnerships to address homelessness.
The role of civil society in data collectionSightsavers
Civil society plays an important role in supporting data collection efforts for monitoring development goals. It has a history of collecting information to inform policy and assess service delivery. Recent examples include a large mapping project that examined over 2 million people to plan trachoma interventions and a disability pilot project that found collecting such data creates demand for more inclusive services. Going forward, civil society can advocate for the 2030 agenda, support citizen accountability, and share lessons learned. It also plays a role in practice and innovation by identifying stakeholders, looking beyond numbers to include marginalized groups, and empowering such groups to own the data. Key is partnering with national authorities to promote sustainability.

Key highlights include work done in various suburbs, awards received, governance structures, workforce information, strategic planning initiatives, sustainability performance, and financial reporting.
Local Open Data: a perspective from local government in England 2014Gesche Schmid
The document discusses open data from the perspective of local government in England. It outlines four phases of working with open data: 1) publishing data, 2) standardizing data, 3) analyzing and using data, and 4) engaging users. The benefits of open data include innovation, improved services, and empowering citizens, businesses and communities. However, engagement with users has been limited due to lack of skills and understanding of what can be done with data. Efforts are needed to stimulate interest, find and analyze relevant data, and tell stories with data to empower communities.

This document discusses using geographic data and interactive maps to identify populations remaining eligible for health insurance coverage. It finds that while smaller geographic areas like ZIP codes provide more neighborhood variation, larger areas like counties are more reliable. Combining census data on eligible populations with administrative enrollment records allows mapping the number and share of people still eligible by location. Interactive maps that include addresses of outreach sites, hospitals and other places can help target remaining eligible individuals. In sum, geographic data and interactive maps are useful tools to improve marketplace outreach when considering the tradeoffs of different geography levels.

Alluxio Webinar | 10x Faster Trino Queries on Your Data PlatformAlluxio, Inc.
Alluxio Webinar
June. 18, 2024
For more Alluxio Events: https://www.alluxio.io/events/
Speaker:
- Jianjian Xie (Staff Software Engineer, Alluxio)
As Trino users increasingly rely on cloud object storage for retrieving data, speed and cloud cost have become major challenges. The separation of compute and storage creates latency challenges when querying datasets; scanning data between storage and compute tiers becomes I/O bound. On the other hand, cloud API costs related to GET/LIST operations and cross-region data transfer add up quickly.
The newly introduced Trino file system cache by Alluxio aims to overcome the above challenges. In this session, Jianjian will dive into Trino data caching strategies, the latest test results, and discuss the multi-level caching architecture. This architecture makes Trino 10x faster for data lakes of any scale, from GB to EB.
What you will learn:
- Challenges relating to the speed and costs of running Trino in the cloud
- The new Trino file system cache feature overview, including the latest development status and test results
- A multi-level cache framework for maximized speed, including Trino file system cache and Alluxio distributed cache
- Real-world cases, including a large online payment firm and a top ridesharing company
- The future roadmap of Trino file system cache and Trino-Alluxio integration

Superpower Your Apache Kafka Applications Development with Complementary Open...Paul Brebner
Kafka Summit talk (Bangalore, India, May 2, 2024, https://events.bizzabo.com/573863/agenda/session/1300469 )
Many Apache Kafka use cases take advantage of Kafka’s ability to integrate multiple heterogeneous systems for stream processing and real-time machine learning scenarios. But Kafka also exists in a rich ecosystem of related but complementary stream processing technologies and tools, particularly from the open-source community. In this talk, we’ll take you on a tour of a selection of complementary tools that can make Kafka even more powerful. We’ll focus on tools for stream processing and querying, streaming machine learning, stream visibility and observation, stream meta-data, stream visualisation, stream development including testing and the use of Generative AI and LLMs, and stream performance and scalability. By the end you will have a good idea of the types of Kafka “superhero” tools that exist, which are my favourites (and what superpowers they have), and how they combine to save your Kafka applications development universe from swamploads of data stagnation monsters!
Why Apache Kafka Clusters Are Like Galaxies (And Other Cosmic Kafka Quandarie...Paul Brebner
Closing talk for the Performance Engineering track at Community Over Code EU (Bratislava, Slovakia, June 5 2024) https://eu.communityovercode.org/sessions/2024/why-apache-kafka-clusters-are-like-galaxies-and-other-cosmic-kafka-quandaries-explored/ Instaclustr (now part of NetApp) manages 100s of Apache Kafka clusters of many different sizes, for a variety of use cases and customers. For the last 7 years I’ve been focused outwardly on exploring Kafka application development challenges, but recently I decided to look inward and see what I could discover about the performance, scalability and resource characteristics of the Kafka clusters themselves. Using a suite of Performance Engineering techniques, I will reveal some surprising discoveries about cosmic Kafka mysteries in our data centres, related to: cluster sizes and distribution (using Zipf’s Law), horizontal vs. vertical scalability, and predicting Kafka performance using metrics, modelling and regression techniques. These insights are relevant to Kafka developers and operators.
