A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

2. Smart Vocabulary
https://www.educationalappstore.com/app/smart-vocabulary
● Smart Vocabulary is an app that is in an educational website. The app is designed to prepare
students for the SAT or ACT. The vocabulary that is selected in this app focuses on the purposes of
the test.
● The app has an interested approach because it is structure in a way of learning music. The words
are learned in octaves with each key of a piano and the keyboard brings up a new word for the
student to learn.
● After, the octave are completed and then there is a task that they need to do. The quizzes that the
app offers allows the student to have retries until they get them correctly.
● The app motivates students to be active learners and than it can be access anywhere.
3. Earth Primer
https://itunes.apple.com/mx/app/earth-primer/id956678532?mt=8
● This app is a virtual game type of app that gives the students the chance to create their own
volcanoes and mountain ranges while learning about them at the same time.
● The app does not just create volcanoes and mountains it can also create the core of the earth and
see how it develops over the years. After the land is build the student can change the terrain in any
way they want.
● The students get information about every process that they make in their own earth. This helps the
students become more creative about the game. It has a similar format to the the virtual game
MInecraft.
● This app would really help when learning about the earth’s function in science class. It can also be
done as a group project where the students can work in groups to create an earth depending on
their perspective.
4. Brainpop and Brainpop Jr
https://www.brainpop.com/about/apps/
● This app is actually two different apps, but they kind of stair step each other so it made sense to
combine them together in one spot.
● Brainpop started as a website with videos to supplement lessons. Originally it was mostly science.
Now it spans across all subjects.
● This app works for kindergarten to about sixth or seventh grade.
● Students can watch videos, take quizzes, play games to learn more about what they are studying in
class.
● I remember how much I enjoyed Brainpop in school and now that it has expanded to all the subjects,
it is still useful and relevant to students today.
5. EPIC
https://www.getepic.com/
● This app has been described as the netflix of books. It is geared for ages 12 and under, however, if
you have an older student with a lower reading level, they could get some use out of this as well.
● Teachers and librarians can get a free account to get student accounts set up.
● Students can choose fiction and nonfiction books. They can also choose to read the book or have it
read to them by the app.
● The accounts can be set up by age and interest so students can easily find books they want to read.
● I have seen this app use in classrooms already and the students are always asking if they can get
on EPIC to read. This app is a good motivator to help students want to read.
6. Splash Math
https://www.splashmath.com/apps
● Splash math is an app for students in kindergarten to fifth grade to help learn math skills
● Teachers can see progress in real time to see where students are succeeding or struggling.
● Students have the opportunity to move ahead for more of a challenge.
● The teacher can create an account and then designate accounts for students.
● Students work through games while learning math skills so it doesn’t really feel like they are learning
so they are more willing to want to do the app.
7. Mad Libs
http://www.madlibs.com/apps/
● Mad libs has been around for a while. First graders through I would say high school could enjoy
using this app.
● You do not need an account, however, you have the option of purchasing more books in the app.
● Students create wild and wacky stories using adjective, nouns, adverbs, etc. They are given blanks
to fill in with specific types of words. At the end, they get to see the crazy story they came up with.
● I used this when tutoring a first grader and she loved it and said it helped her to remember what
adjectives and nouns were.
8. Cell Biology 101
https://tutorful.co.uk/blog/60-best-educational-apps#apps-for-kids-11-18
● The app can use in the classroom as study method for a science class. The app has flashcards
and quizzes that allow students to study for a biology exam or a science test that deals with the
function of the cell.
● The app will help students have a better picture of the cell and they can practice labeling it as group.
● The quizzes are very interactive and the it encourages the students to learned some study skills.
● This app would mostly benefit students in high school that are taking biology.
● It also has flashcards that allow the student to use as a study guide.
