Sexual addiction is characterized by a lack of control over sexual thoughts, urges, and behaviors. It can affect people of any gender from age 16 onward. While there is no proven single cause, it may have biological, psychological, and social roots. Biologically, pleasurable activities like sex release dopamine in the brain, and dopamine becomes addictive, potentially leading to sexual addiction. Emotionally, sexual addiction can cause shame, guilt, anger, depression, and social consequences. Treatment involves therapy, counseling, recovery groups and activities, and sometimes medications.
