The fast approaching General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) comes into effect May 25, 2018 and will be bringing significant change to the way businesses operate and handle personal data. This is not just a “European” issue, this law covers anyone that offers a service in Europe, including many cloud applications and cloud vendors, from startups to enterprise companies.
Join Justin Antonipillai, CEO of WireWheel.io, and former Acting Under Secretary for Economic Affairs at the US Department of Commerce, to learn more about how the GDPR will affect your business, what you need to know, and major phases and activities you’ll want to prepare for compliance.

GDPR or General Data Protection Regulation is a significant new EU Data Protection Regulation. Approved in April 2016, the GDPR is in effect since May 25th, 2018. Know more about GDPR here: https://serverguy.com/news/general-data-protection-regulation-gdpr-guide/
Understanding the EU's new General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)Acquia
In 2016, the European Union (EU) approved its General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) to protect European citizens’ data. As a regulation, the GDPR does not require the implementation of legislation, and will immediately become an applicable law as of the 25th of May, 2018.
What is GDPR exactly trying to accomplish? According to the official documents, the goal is the “protection of natural persons with regard to the processing of personal data and on the free movement of such data.”
In short, organizations that conduct business in the EU will need to be compliant with GDPR, and must come to terms with the huge fines that non-compliance can carry. Fines can be up to €20M or 4% of the annual turnover. For companies that experience breaches that result in the loss of personal data (such as Talk Talk, which lost 170,000 people’s data), the fines will be tremendous.
Join us for discussion about GDPR to learn more about:
The principles that organizations that use personal data need to adhere to
The consequences organizations can face if that do not adhere to this new regulation
How your organization can prepare for the future
An In House Counsel and Privacy Practitioners update on the changed regulatory landscape.
The Privacy and Data Protection Act 2014 received Royal Assent on 2 September 2014.
The new legislation replaces the Information Privacy Act 2000, and the Commissioner for Law Enforcement Data Security Act 2005, with a unified scheme governing the handling of personal information and data by Victorian Public sector agencies.
Big data contains valuable information— some of it sensitive customer data—that can be a honeypot for internal and external attackers. Given the risk involved, organizations must proactively enhance defenses and prevent data breaches. The four steps outlined in this deck, help organizations to develop a holistic approach to data security and privacy.

Briefing on US EPA Open Data Strategy using a Linked Data Approach3 Round Stones
An overview presented by Ms. Bernadette Hyland on 18-Nov 2014 on the US EPA Open Data strategy, focusing on the Resource Conservation & Recovery Act (RCRA) dataset to be published as linked data . This work is in support of Presidential Memorandum M13-13 - Open Data Policy and Managing Information as an Asset.
Big data refer to the ongoing accumulation of massive, often complex and always-changing data sets – for instance, machine-generated data from sensors or cell phone GPS signals. Or it may be data from social media sites.
Open data are data sets made available to the public to use and reuse. Those sets may come from Big Data but they don’t have to.The act of opening data is like extending an invitation to anyone to freely take the data and turn it into something useful.
Presentation I did at Social Bar at the 4th of November in Berlin. It's a 10 minute talk about open government data for people who are not familiar with the topic.

Introduction: Open (Government) Data, Conference at the Parliament of the Czech Republic, Chamber of Deputies on 28.02.2012, Open Data & Public Sector, Prague by Martin Kaltenböck (SWC, OKFO).
Canada’s Information Commissioners have adopted a resolution toward Open Government and part of the open government process is open access to public administrative, census, map and research data. A number of Canadian Cities, innovative government programs such as GeoConnections, forward thinking research funding such as International Polar Year have become OpenData cities, implemented data sharing infrastructures and fund data sharing science. Access to data are one part of the open government conversation, and it is argued that opendata bring us closer to more informed democratic deliberations on public policy.
