An increasing number of teens are abusing prescription drugs, with approximately 1.9 million students abusing them. Seven of the top 11 commonly used drugs by high school seniors are prescribed or over-the-counter drugs. Prescription drug abuse is more prevalent than abuse of heroin, methamphetamine, and cocaine combined, and is only less common than marijuana abuse. Teachers can help by educating students, bringing in guest speakers, distributing pamphlets and books, and increasing awareness of alternatives to drugs like sports, after school clubs, and spending time with family and friends.
