Definition
• Prescription is an order written by a physician, dentist, veterinarian or a registered medical
practitioner (RMP) to a Pharmacist to compound and dispense specific medication for the
patient".
Important features of a prescription:
• Directions are given to the pharmacist about what type of preparation (tablet, power, mixture
etc.) is to be prepared. Prescription generally written in latin language
• It contains directions for the patients, the dose of the drug and the dose interval, and how it is to
be taken.
PART OF PRESCRIPTION
1. DATE- Helps to find out the date of prescribing and date of presentation for filling the
prescription.
2. NAME, AGE, GENDER AND ADDRESS OF PATIENT- Serves to identify the prescription. In case of
children, helps to check the prescribed dose of medication
3. SUPERSCRIPTION- Symbol Rx, Written before writing prescription
