Claribel Alegria is a Nicaraguan writer known for her poetry, fiction, biography, and history works. Her fiction work "Family Album" contains three short stories told primarily from a third person perspective, though at times switches to first person as Claribel explains the supernatural elements in her stories. The stories are set throughout her childhood and take place during periods of political upheaval, such as the 1979 Revolution in El Salvador. Though her work explored authentic experiences of her family and blended reality with imagination, Claribel's writing remained largely untranslated until 1978. She studied in the U.S. in the 1940s and was one of the first Central American women to obtain a university degree.
