KNOW YOUR AUDIENCE AND OCCASION
According to Manalo (1988), there are W’s to consider:
1. Who are your audience.
-there age, interest, education levels, etc.
2. What is the expectation of the audience.
-theme, mood, length, etc.
3. When is the occasion.
-theme must be in line with the occasion and time.
4. Where is the place of the meeting.
-this will affect the delivery of the speech if it is open air,
closed and crowded room, etc.
5. Why did the group from the occasion and why are you invited
-remember that the audiences have the reason for their
coming, so as speaker you must be able to hit their
expectation.
You must consider the age, sex, race, family status, economic status, educational
status, their community, occupation, religion, politics, and membership.
Find out the specific details about the occasion such as date and hour attendance,
place of meeting type of meaning.
Select and limit your topic.
1. Timely – good timing is like water to a thirsty
2. Relates to life – people are interested about people and their lives
3. Additional in for the business, work, profession of the group – people are eager to
listen to the person who could give them a good advice regarding to their profession.
4. Controversial – latest event or issues that are hot to talk
5. Other group interest like sports for the athletics, love and courtship among the youth,
parenting among married, etc.
If your speech is your own choice, your topic must be
interesting, suitable appropriate to the occasion and limited to the
time available. The following may help you to evaluate your topic if it
is interesting:
“It is best that you talk about something that relates
to your own experience, your interest, your conviction. “
DETERMINE YOUR PURPOSE

knowledge, to make thing clear, to secure understanding.
To Entertain – the objective of the speaker is to please the audience.
To Persuade or Convince – the speech is to make the audience think, feel
and act the way the speaker want them to.
