How to prepare? 4 tasks
WHAT KIND OF YOUTH-LED INITIATIVES EXIST IN
YOUR COUNTRY?
What kind of initiatives do young people
set up/run in your country to jointly overcome
some challenges they face? We would like to ask
you to learn more about them. If you cannot
find any within SOS, look for external initiatives,
that young people voluntarily set up, run and lead?
On the next slide you can also find an example from a youth-led initiative in Senegal,
Dakar.
We would like to ask you to engage with the young leaders. Your national
coordinator will be able to help. Learn about youth led initiatives in your
country, engage with the people behind and, ask many questions, like e.g.:
What do they do? What is their motivation / the challenge that they jointly want to
overcome? What is their suggested solution? How many young people participate?
How do they work and collaborate? What have been successes, results and
challenges? What kind of support would they like to get? etc.
Please prepare a 5 minute presentation for our discussion on Thursday. Please
prepare 1-4 PowerPoint slides, if possible including some pictures.
1
TH-LED
Example of a Youth-led initiative in Nicaragua
In SOS CV Dakar, young people have set
up a youth association to promote their
right to participation. The association
enables them to share their views, in
regards to the general care work in the
Village.
• They discuss their problems, propose
alternatives and raise their voices
• They helped improve the living
environment of the Village, eg by
organising a cleaning operation.
• They also organised a Christmas party
in 2017 and gave gifts to the younger
children.
The association is well-organised, with a
steering committee and regular meetings
in the premises of the Village.
EXAMPLE OF A YOUTH-LED
INITIATIVE:
The youth association in Dakar –
A great model of dynamism
How to prepare? Task 2
2 HOW CAN TECHNOLOGY IMPROVE YOUTH
WORK?
Information and communication technology (ICT) helps us create, use and exchange
information. It makes our lives easier in many ways. Also for SOS youth work ICT
offers big potential to improve youth programmes or make them more efficient.
Please reflect on the following questions, together with your national
coordinator and other young people from SOS programmes:
• What do you currently use ICT for in your life and for which purposes would you
like to use it more in future?
• What do you need to make better use of technology to support your
development?
• How could SOS use ICT to modernize and improve the support for young people
in family based care and in family strengthening programmes?
Please take some notes from your discussion and if possible bring some
pictures, you do NOT need to prepare a presentation!
NEW:
We kindly ask you to take 5 minutes to fill in this online questionnaire until 20 June
https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/IYCMEETING.
Through this questionnaire, we want to gather information on how you get online and
how technology helps you strengthen your social networks and your skills. We can
have a look at the results together!!

How to prepare? Task 3
3
We will all be super curious to get to know each
other and to learn something interesting about
the countries we come from. Sharing something
typical about our cultures will make our group
evening special fun.
What is it that you would like to share about
your country? This could e.g. be some typical
music or food that you would like other young
people to get to know, a typical dance you
would like them to teach or something else.
WHAT IS SOMETHING SPECIAL YOU LIKE ABOUT YOUR COUNTRY?
4
HOW TO PREPARE – TASK 4
4 Strengthening Youth Participation
– What have we achieved in 2018
In 2018 we worked together on strengthening youth participation. You all ran workshops with young people in
your country, to understand what are the issues and what is there view on it. Did this result in any change?
2.1: Please reflect on the following questions, so you are prepared to talk about this within the group:
!!! - This is only relevant for those of you who were part of the IYC in 2018 already – new members can
skip this task - !!!
• Did this change you, your skills, your behaviour or attitudes? If yes, how?
• Did your engagement help to change some aspects of the SOS programme you are part of? If yes, how?
• Did your engagement help to change the mindset of some SOS co-workers? If yes, how?
We from our side thoroughly analysed all the inputs we received from you and upon this built a “youth
participation guide”. This document will help youth care workers and other staff to better understand wat youth
participation is and how they bring it to life in their daily work with young people. In the meeting we will discuss
how your inputs shaped the guide.
2.2. As preparation for the meeting we would like to ask you to read through the shortversion of the
guide that we send to you via mail. We are aware, that the language might be a bIt technical (SORRY)
but hope you can understand the basic concepts and ideas.
