Preliminary task evaluation
Filming our preliminary task become quite a big issue with our group. With our
original task we spent about 2 hours filming it at my house, it was very well
detailed and when edited together would have been around 2/3 minutes long,
even though it only had to be about 1 minute long. We filmed it one day after
school. My group (Me, Ellie, Chloe) decided we wanted to use a horror drama
which was quite gory, it was called ‘loveat firstbite’ which was about 2 people
who met online and were having a dinner date at the man’s house, however
the man was really a murderer and ended up killing her at the end of the meal.
Ellie was the woman in it and our other friend Henry offered to volunteer and
be the murderer, which worked well as they were both good at acting, me and
Chloe were then in chargeof the camera and telling both ellie and henry what
to do. The place we decided to shoot it, which was my housewas a perfect
location as my house is in quite an isolated place which gaveit quite a scary
effect, we did this by doing an establishing shotof the house to show that it
was in quite an isolated place creating the scary atmospherethat we wanted.
This was perfect becausethe woman was going to a houseshe had never been
before to meet a man she had never met. We had to film the shots quite a few
times which is why it took so long for us to film it, becauseellie and henry both
had to be quite serious to create a scary atmosphere, they kept laughing and
found it quite hard to concentrate, but as they practised more and morethey
began to get better and stopped laughing. One thing I did find hard was using a
tripod as I was in charge of the camera, I didn’tlike using a tripod as I was
fighting it hard to move about and I preferred holding the camera myself,
although by doing this it was quite difficult to keep the filming smooth as my
hands were quite shaky. Another reason why it took so long for us to film was
because I keep stopping filming each clip too quickly meaning I would cut the
ending out of them talking, which meant we had to film the same clip again
and sometimes it wasn’talways as good as the first clip which was quite
frustrating and wasted quite a bit of time.
Once wefinished editing we decided we were going to usenon-diegetic aswell
as diegetic sound. Wewould usequite tense and eary music to set a tense
atmospheremaking it more like a horror film. However we did have a problem
with this becausewhen we broughtthe camera back in to schoolwe didn’t
immediately upload our videos to our computer and therefore it got deleted
off of the camera when the camera needed to be used for another group,
meaning we lost all of our work. Wewere very frustrated with this and caused
a massiveproblem becausewhen we decided to film it again, henry wasn’t
able to be part of it as he was very busy with things he had to do himself so our
filming of our second preliminary task was delayed for a few weeks.
However wedecided to film another one in our media lesson, wefilmed it in
about 20 minutes which was a lot quicker than our firstwas which meant is
wasn’tas detailed and wasn’tof as good quality. We had to film it in school
which isn’t something we wanted to do but we had to because it needed to be
filmed and edited as soon as possible. We filmed it during one of our media
lessons using the drama block and one of the teacher’s offices. Becausethe
location of our task had to change we had to changeto the storyline aswellas
it would have been a bit harder to film ‘love at firstbite’ in a teacher’s office
when it was meant to be set in someone’s houseand kitchen, so we changed it
to a police interrogation. Our teachers office worked perfectly for that because
it looked very similar to an officeyou would find in a police station, it was quite
small, had a table with chairs at both ends, a computer and was filled up paper
and work which looked a bit like documents you would find in a police office.
Because henry couldn’t be part of it and we completely changed it Chloe and
ellie decided that it would be easier if they were both justthe actors in it so we
wouldn’thave to wasteany more time finding people who would do it, also we
were in a lesson at this time and would havebeen hard to find people to be
part of it because they would either be in a lesson or working in their free time.
We did an establishing shotof the drama block which we filmed our
preliminary task in becauseit justlooked like a regular building, we used non
diegetic music in this task justlike weplanned to in our firstshoot. The music
we used was the sortof music you’d find in a detective movie which would
have created quite a tense atmosphere.
Before we edited all of our clips together we had to crop them all because you
can hear me talking in the background telling the girls when to go so they know
we to start acting, this didn’t take very long and our preliminary task was
filmed and almost completely edited all in one lesson. Although it wasn’tas
good as the firstone we shotit included all the camera angles/shots that we
needed for our task.
In conclusion I think that our group found shooting our preliminary task quite a
challenge and we really should have been morefocused when our firsttask got
deleted. Although it wasn’tour fault that it got deleted we should have been
more organised when it came to filming our second one becauseinstead of
planning and sorting out another one straightaway we tried to forget about it
and left it as long as possibleuntil we did it again and waited until our teacher
finally made us do it in one of our lessons meaning that it was quite rushed and
doesn’tshow our ability of filming becauseif wehad more time it would have
been a lot better and detailed.
