How to Make it in Media Planning - Tom Brady EditionJulian Lewis
Meeting a young media planner last week, I was inspired to post this deck. I created a few year back when I worked on the agency side, for my buddy who was the assistant planner on our team (he's a huge TB12 fan).
Planners/buyers tend to have some of the toughest gigs in the business, managing large budgets for huge brands. My intention in creating this was to keep him inspired and on a growth path. I hope it helps to do the same for others, whether you love TB12 or not!

1. Preliminary Task Briefing
In a group of three-to-four people, create
a 30-40 second radio show introduction
for „Oldham Community Radio‟ – which
will form the basis of this coursework. The
show will be a short interview with a local
comedian.
2. Requirement (1)
Create an appropriate show/station jingle of your
own composition, or from a copyright-free source.
This jingle can either be for our specific show, or for the
station as a whole, and must feature the usual conventional
elements of a radio jingle. This jingle cannot be reused for
the main task – however, we still plan on creating our own if
possible.
3. Requirement (2)
An introduction from the broadcast presenter.
As is standard for any kind of radio broadcast, our presenter
will introduce themselves (“Good Morning, I‟m…”) as well as
the show itself (“Today we‟re here with…) and possible the
radio station if there is enough time, however this is not
necessary as the jingle will do this, too. (You‟re listening to…)
This will establish all relevant information for the listening
audience, so that they are fully aware of what they are
listening to.
4. Requirement (3)
Greet the studio guest, who is an up-and-coming
local comedian, and introduce them to the
audience.
As with the presenter greeting, greeting the studio guest is to
be both polite and informative. This will establish to the
audience who our comedian is, give relevant factual
information on their background, and convey that this is a
radio interview of some kind.
5. Requirement (4)
A question/answer format, having the comedian
respond to a relevant, interesting question asked by
the broadcast presenter.
This is a standard interview format – the guest answering
questions (or one question in this case, due to time
constraints) put to them by the broadcast presenter. In
producing an interview, it is only right for us to follow a
conventional interview format – the questions put to the
comedian must provide some kind of entertainment and
insight, too.
6. Requirement (5)
An archive clip of the comedian performing – must
sound authentic, like an arena performance with an
audience.
This archive clip is intended to show off the comedian doing
his job, and performing in a professional environment – to
emphasise the legitimacy of our interviewee. Whilst it would
be difficult to replicate a real comedic situation, we will make
use of audio editing software to apply appropriate sound
effects such as echo, and audience laughter, to make the
recording seem legitimate.
