2. Brief
• In media studies I was asked to create a school magazine and front cover.
In order for me to be able to complete this task I had to use programmes
such as Photoshop and learn how to use all of the tools on it, which would
help me in the near future create a music magazine which is my main task.
My intentions for this task were to become familiar with Photoshop, using
a camera and taking a variety of shots thus giving me a slight advantage
due to me gaining knowledge for my main task.

AS Media Studies Preliminary Task – School Magazine Front Page Proposal Form
Target audience: 13-18
(age range, interests)
Although it is a school newsletter you still have to think about your
audience and how to appeal to them.
Possible title ideas: The Press
(masthead / title block) The Preston
What is your magazine going to be called? iPreston
Main image:
What will be the focal point of your front page, remember, your work
“must include a photograph of a student in a medium close-up”
Main cover line: “We want more school trips”
What will be the main story?
Additional key images:
What other images will be on your front cover?
Remember, it is a school magazine.
Additional cover lines: “Talent show behind the scenes”
Other features, stories or selling points which will be inside the magazine, “A Levels & GCSE results scandal”
these need to be audience appropriate.
Typography: Typography will link to the colours the school is associated with such as blue, purple and
(style, size, colour of copy) white
Think about the writing and the style of the writing on your front page.
Background colour/image: School colours (Preston manor) – blue, purple, white
What will be in the background, remember you don’t want to take the
focus away from the main image.
Technical considerations: Camera, graffiti wall to take pictures in in front of
(equipment, setting, props, costume, lighting)
Be realistic and creative, think about what you have access to and how
you could use it.
8. Before
I focused on the colours associated
with Preston Manor High School and
with this I created a blue and white
background. I also made the title
white and purple which is also
colours apart of the school logo. I
used a drop shadow, inner shadow After
and stroke to make the title appear
sharper which it did as you can see
what it looked like before and the
final edition
9. • The original picture
looked like this…
However using
Photoshop I cropped the
picture and put it on the
white background in
front of the title using the
magnetic lasso tool. As
the main image covers
some of the title of the
magazine I wanted to
give the impression that
my magazine was
established enough to be
covered and still be
known similarly to many
magazines.
10. Stories/Articles were on the side plainly in
the background at first however I decided
to add shapes with a purple fill and make
the articles go on top of that in order to
make the magazine seem more professional
and make the articles stand out more.

11. Conclusion
During the process of creating a school magazine front cover I learnt how to
use the different tools on Photoshop which I will be able to apply to my main
task, creating the music magazine. I have learnt what specific shots work and
how un-naturalistic some shots look on a magazine, I also learnt that I should
take a variety of shots which I will be doing for my music magazine.
