1. Research and Planning
Task
For the second part of your first piece of coursework you
have to plan and design the front cover for one edition of a
brand new magazine aimed at a specific audience. To
ensure that you do this task to the best of your abilities
complete the following tasks in your sketch book.
TASK ONE:
The Genre – Think about what type of magazine you
want to produce it has to be a genre that is popular. So
will it be a music magazine (if so what genre of music will
it cover), fashion magazine, health magazine, etc.
TASK TWO:
The Audience – who do you want to be your target
audience? Create a reader profile for your target audience
just like a real magazine would (see examples). Provide
demographic and psychographic information.
TASK THREE:
The Cover – you need to make sure that when you
design your cover you match all the convention of a real
magazine and you consider how it would appeal to a
target your audience, therefore you need to include:
Title block
Puffs (what would be in the magazine?)
Key Signifier
Buzz words
Anchorage text
Date line & Price
Barcode
Slogan (optional)
2. You will also need to think about:
Use of colour
The layout
Mode of Address (formal/ informal)
Camera shots
Body Language
Use of Typography (title block and other text)
1. To complete task three first think about the title of your
magazine and its connotations, remember KERRANG!
is called Kerrang because is sounds like a guitar,
GRAZIA means ‘grace’ and VOGUE means ‘in fashion’.
Get the point?
2. Now in your book design a minimum of three ways for
how the title block could look, what colour would it be,
what typography would you use (these all contribute to
connotations) where would the slogan be placed?
3. Write down PUFFS and BUZZ WORDS that could
feature on the cover, remember PUFFS will tell the
reader what’s inside of the magazine but you will only
put really good puffs on the cover to attract the
audience and convince them the magazine in worth
buying, some puffs use quotes from an interview or
alliteration. BUZZ WORDS a maximum of 3 would be
enough.
4. What pictures are you going to use on the front of the
magazine, depended on the genre you may you loads
or just one, but you need to justify your creative
choices.
TASK FOUR:
The Layout – using A3 paper design your magazine!
