Prefixes are word parts added to the beginning of root words that change the word's meaning. Some common prefixes and their meanings are re, which means again; dis, which means the opposite of or lack of; un, which means not; sub, which means under; and mis, which means wrongly. Prefixes have the opposite function of suffixes by being added at the start of words rather than the end.
