Introduction
• Android "Marshmallow" (codenamed M in-
development) is the 6th major version of the Android
operating system. First unveiled in May 2015 at
Google, it was officially released in October 2015.
• Marshmallow primarily focuses on improving the
overall user experience of Lollipop.
• Google releases a slightly improved version of Android
every year, but this time around it's pulled out all the
stops. Android Marshmallow is the latest version of
Android, and includes brand-new features that make
using your smartphone even better.
PREVIOUS VERSIONS OF ANDROID
ABOUT ANDROID
• Android is a mobile operating system developed by Google. It is
used by several smartphones and tablets. Examples include the
Sony Xperia, the Samsung Galaxy, and the Google Nexus One.
• Lollipop is the dessert-themed Android codename for the 5.0
update of the open source Android mobile operating system.
Lollipop debuted in November 2014 as the successor to the "KitKat"
Android release.
• The Android 4.4 KitKat operating system uses memory
optimization technologies. Android devices with as little as
512 MB of RAM. This is important because previous versions
of the operating system required more internal memory
which made them incompatible with many older device
models.
FEATURES OF MARSHMALLOW
USB Type-C
• USB-C Allows quicker charging as well as high speed data transfer.
• USB-C cable has the identical ports in both ways, so you need not
to worry about the way you connect the cable, as you can use it in
two ways, after USB2.0,USB type A and B this must be the
advanced type of Micro USB-C for smartphones.
Now on Tap
• Google Now on Tap gives you quick
information without having to leave the
current app.
• The information you get will depend on
what you're viewing on your screen at the
time you long-press the Home button.
• Now on Tap copies and pastes what you're
viewing into Google Now and opens an
overlay with related information.
Clear permissions system
• When you use the app, and when special features are required for the first
time, for example, use the camera, read your contact list, access some
sensors, you will be prompted the window to grant (allow) or deny the
permission as shown below.
• In the screenshot below, OneDrive app is trying to access your media files.
If you are comfortable with it, you can tap Allow.
• If you tap Deny, the app will not be able to see, and therefore not be able
to backup your media files to the drive. You need understand the
consequences.
Personalised lockscreen message
• A new textbox just under the lockscreen time helps
personalise your phone – and could be a perfect place
for motivational quotes, important reminders, name
tags and much more.
Storage is easier to manage
• The new feature will allow
you to use external storage
on your device as internal
storage. It's likely to be
popular, as you'll be able to
buy a more affordable
device with low internal
storage and boost it cheaply
by adding a microSD card.
Doze
• Android Marshmallow also
increases the amount of
control you have over energy
usage. With Lollipop, the
battery saver mode can be
switched on and off: that’s it.
• Now, each app can be opted
in or out of standard power
optimization, which happens
all the time, not just when
battery saver mode is
switched on.
Fingerprint scanners
• Fingerprint scanners have
been on Android phones for a
while now, but Marshmallow
is the first time they will be
used properly.
• Rather than a tacked-on
feature for unlocking your
Android phone, Google's new
OS pushes the fingerprint
reader front and centre, which
makes it compatible with a
range of third-party apps.
Volume controls and Do Not Disturb
• you can silence the phone
or tablet totally total
silence mode.
• you can get calls and
messages from favorite
contacts only, and
notifications from specific
apps only priority only
mode.
• you can automatically
limit sounds and
interruptions at specific
time.
Conclusion
Android Marshmallow has quickly made it clear that the
changes are significantly smaller than they were between
the Lollipop update and KitKat. The improvements that have
been made with Android Marshmallow are sorely needed,
because Lollipop still feels like a prematurely released
product and still poses problems for many users.
