8. • A new Android release typically involves only OS
basic features
(UI, notifications, battery control, etc.)
• Other key updates involving the dev platforms,
Play store or core apps are distributes across the
year
• Here we present a summary of all major
announcements in the Android space in the last
4/6 months

Android improvements are released across the year
10. What it is?
Restricting the way apps work in the
background (WiFi, Location updates)
What does it mean?
Developers need to be aware if an app
relies on services like location scanning /
updates.
Users will get more play time per charge
and a faster device.
Better battery, faster devices
11. What it is?
Users can leave an app such as YouTube
while still watching the video, leaving
them free to do something else at the
same time.
What does it mean?
Multitasking, and a more efficient user
experience. Currently just for video, but
this may change.
Picture in picture mode (PIP)
12. What it is?
Notifications have been updated in Android
Oreo, allowing users to tweak them to their
personal preferences.
What does it mean?
These notification changes are to give the
user more control, helping them enjoy a
much less disrupted experience during
completion of tasks, without losing the
urgent messaging capability that
notifications provide.
Smart(er) notifications
13. What it is?
Users to access a specific function/page of the app by tapping and
holding on the icon on the home screen and in the application tray.
These shortcuts are determined by the developer and cannot be
customised for the user.
Pinned shortcuts are new, allowing users to quickly access a specific
feature of an app without having to open it.
What does it mean?
Android has always given users the freedom of personalising their
home screens to tailor to their everyday use. Pinned shortcuts support
this and allow further customisation of the home screen.

14. • Android Oreo has put the user at its centre. And likewise, as
we examine how the new version might influence our apps
and our businesses, and explore the new opportunities it
brings, we should strive to always enhance, rather than
disrupt, the user experience.
• As Android increases hyperpersonalisation and puts power
further into the hands of the user, we need to think about
how to add more value, from product proposition through to
design.

24. • As of June this year, the total number of apps in the Play store has
surpassed 3 million
• Despite some suggestions the growth in the number of apps has not
slowed down in recent years

revenue, the Play Store is growing faster with
higher overall download numbers (despite being
banned in China)

25. Latest changes and Android O
Google Play Developer Console
becomes Google Play Console Updated search page layout Google Play Protect
Following about a year without an update, the
Google Play Developer Console has received a new
material design and has been renamed Google Play
Console. In terms of functionality few changes were
made to make it more user friendly and provide
more in-depth information to developers.
Info cards are now displayed when specific brand names
are searched for. A new layout adds screenshots and video
(if available) to the icon and app name.
Google has tried to simplify branded searches and the new
layout makes users more likely to install an app without
viewing the app.
Google Play Protect is a security package for
Android devices consisting of app scanning,
browser protection, and anti-theft measures. This
is an always-on service, said to scan 50 billion
apps per day across a billion Android devices to
ensure they are safe.
26. • Apps are more discoverable
• Finding apps easier due to the superior search engine
• Cleaner design and layout
• Superior information until now – better organised info on
downloads, category placement, description
Google Play Store vs. App Store
• Google play has much more robust web interface
• Ability to install apps from desktop directly to device
• Same information as on mobile to avoid confusion
• Download apps to multiple devices at once
• Broader device compatibility
• Tablets and smartphones
• Developers less reliant on the Google than on Apple
• Being featured in the App Store is more difficult
• Harder to become an Apple partner
• Innovation
• First ones to allow video on app store page
• Instant apps
• Voice search
28. Device fragmentation is a growing issue for Android
• There are more than 2 billion Android
devices in the world
• More than double the number of iOS
devices
• Difficult to deliver innovation in such
fragmented landscape
• 3G covers 99% of developed markets
but only 32% of developing markets
• Long tail of less powerful devices in
developing countries
29. Android Go and the battle for emerging markets
• Android Go is a lightweight
version of Oreo
• for lower end devices with
limited connectivity and
multilingual capabilities
• Play Store will highlight apps
that can run on cheap devices
• Core apps lighter version for Go
to ensure they use less storage
space, processing power and
mobile data (Chrome Go, Gmail
Go, Youtube Go)
30. • Industry vertical integration –
following Pixel line collaboration
• Breaking the duopoly
Apple/Samsung
• Tighter integration between
hardware, Android OS and Google’s
services
• In the current market landscape, to
deliver voice you need to control the
hardware
• In the long term, have more control
on fragmentation of Android devices
Google will acquire control on HTC’s smartphone team for $1.1 b
32. Easier to develop
intelligent features
for your native apps
Google services evolve
toward
hyperpersonalisation
Better hardware for
developed countries,
better software for
emerging markets
Key takeaways
Google is strengthening its positioning
in both developed and emerging
markets. While the acquisition of HTC
smartphone business is intended to
provide a better experience for high
end customers, Android Go is the first
step to create a meaningful experience
for users in emerging market
However, Google is also competing
for the users’ time and eyeballs with
their services and advertising.
Google’s strategy to engage and retail
users is to offer the most personalised
experience
Google is battling with Apple to
provide the best ecosystem for third
parties to create and grow intelligent
services
