Rapid tooling is an important technique that allows for the fast and low-cost production of tools. There are two main methods of rapid tooling: indirect and direct. Indirect methods involve creating a pattern that is then used to create a mold, while direct methods create the mold directly. Soft tooling uses flexible materials like silicone rubber that have short lifespans, while hard tooling uses more durable materials. Common rapid tooling techniques include silicone rubber tooling and different direct techniques like direct metal laser sintering. Rapid tooling offers shorter lead times and lower costs than conventional tooling methods.
