PROJECT MOTIVATION
• The amount of MSW produced in Srinagar, with an approximate of 570 MT per day.
• The amount of weed generated in Dal Lake, with an approximate of 100000 cubic meters per year,
which is one of the major tourist attractions of the city.
• The amount of walnut shell waste produced in Kashmir, with an approximate of 15000 tons per year.
• An increased attention in the scientific community on to mitigate the challenges of energy production
along with preservation of environment.
• For Srinagar city itself no sustainable methods have been developed to deal with the growing
production of solid waste and Dal weeds.
• Co-pyrolysis of MSW and Dal Weeds can prove to be a breakthrough in generation of energy and
management of waste simultaneously. It can provide means of producing clean and green energy and
alleviate pollution.
WHY PYROLYSIS?
• Pyrolysis process has been identified as a sustainable thermal conversion of waste to energy technology
due to high efficiency and good eco-friendly performance characteristics.
• Thermal conversion of waste can provide a productive and flexible waste to energy production of
biofuels and useful chemicals. Co-pyrolysis of MSW and biomass offers a synergetic effect producing
cleaner energy and low emissions.
• It is a simple, inexpensive technology for processing a wide variety of feedstocks.
• It reduces waste going to landfill and greenhouse gas emissions. It reduces the risk of water and land
pollution.

OUR INITIATION
SMW related data (SXR city):
• Approximately 600 MT of waste are produced daily in the 296 km2 Srinagar city, according to figures
of the Srinagar Municipal Corporation, of which 80 MT are retained at the household level. 130MT of
the remaining 520MT are processed using recovey, composting, and recycling methods.
• Out of the 520MT acquired, 60% is organic while the remaining 40% is made up of inorganic materials
plus inerts (such as plastic, tin, and polyethene).
• 10 MT of this 40% are recycled.
• 180MT are dumped in landfills.
Sampling of SMW:
• SMW samples were taken from Aivakadal dumping yard in Soura area of the
Srinagar city.
• Samples were taken from 3 different cells of the site:
Cell 1 :
Age - 9 years
Depth - 25 feet
Cell 2 :
Age - 2 to 5 days
Cell 3 :
Age - 5 years
Depth - 5 feet
• The sample was first heaped up in the shape of a cone and then cut into four
sections using the coning and quartering technique.
• Two opposite parts were taken and mixed thoroughly and the other two were
discarded. This was done until the required sample of 4 kg was obtained.
Segregation of SMW:
About 4 kg samples from three cells:
Paper and cardboard waste = 0.28kg
Plastic and polythene waste = 0.2kg
Textile waste = 1.3kg
Organic waste = 0.1 kg
Others = 1.72 kg
*on air dried basis
Biomass Identification:
Dal weeds
Every year more than 100,000 cubic meters of weed are removed
both manually and using machines from the lake and thrown away as waste.
Walnut Shells
In Kashmir, every year more than 15000 tons of walnut shells
are produced and wasted.
