Defining Sex and Gender
Session: Grade 4 - 6
Laundry Listing
(body parts, traits, objects, work and roles
related to man and woman)
Sex - refers to the biological
characteristics of male or female which
include genitalia, hormones, chromosomes
(X and Y chromosomes).
Gender - refers to the socially constructed
characteristics of women and men - such as
norms, roles, and relationships of and between
groups of women and men. It segregates people
into categories (masculine, feminine).

CSE is a curriculum-based process of teaching
and learning about the cognitive, emotional, physical
and social aspects of sexuality
• CSE Objectives
Aims to equip children and young people with knowledge, skills,
attitudes and values that will empower to:
• realize their health, wellbeing and dignity;
• develop respectful social and sexual relationships;
• consider how their choices affect their own well-being and that
of others;
• understand and ensure the protection of their rights
throughout their lives

Here are some ways to promote
gender sensitivity in education:
The goal is to be Gender Sensitive
The learners will have new ways of:
• Seeing - men and women, what they actually do, rather than
relying of assumptions and stereotypes. Recognize the
diversity of different groups of men and women.
• Hearing - actual needs, priorities and perspectives of men
and women
• Counting - the value of women’s work
• Respecting - the full dignity of men and women. Fairness
of treatment for men and women according to their respective
needs.

  2. Good Afternoon Everyone. I am task today to discuss with you the CSE Primer for Parents and Guardians. So, my topic is Defining Sex and Gender. We will know the difference between sex and gender.
  3. Let's have an activity called 'Laundry Listing', in which we list all attributes that are specific to men or women. Ill give you 10 minutes to finish the activity and assign someone to present your work. What did you notice on the list? Anyone? The activity shows that men and women are different not only physically but also in other aspect of their life
  4. Anyone knows what is the difference between Sex and Gender.
  5. The term "sex" refers to the biological and physiological differences between males and females. In humans, the two main sexes are male and female, which are determined by the presence of either an X and a Y chromosome (XY) in males or two X chromosomes (XX) in females. Sex also includes other physical characteristics, such as genitalia and hormones, that differentiate males and females. These characteristics are determined by genetic and hormonal influences and are present at birth and continue to develop during puberty and throughout adulthood. Gender' refers to your sense of who you are as a guy, girl or something else, as opposed to what your physical characteristics, genes and hormones indicate. Identifying your gender can be more diverse than simply seeing yourself as ‘male’ or ‘female’, and people express their gender in different ways. It is learned through socialization and shaped by a variety of factors, including family, peers, media, education, and personal experiences. However, gender is not fixed, and people may identify and express themselves in ways that do not conform to traditional gender norms and expectations. There are several different types of gender that have been recognized and studied by various fields including sociology, psychology, and gender studies.
