The Hero Of The Hobbit
The hero s journey begins with the hero being introduced in their ordinary world. This is where the
reader learns about the hero s background, flaws and strengths. This is so that the reader can establish
a bond with the situation, which gives them experience of an adventure through the hero. In chapter 1
of The Hobbit, Tolkien introduces Bilbo Baggins as an ordinary hobbit who lives in an ordinary hobbit
hole on the side of The Hill. In this chapter Tolkien hints towards Bilbo s mother s side, the Took clan,
who something was not entirely hobbit like about them (Page 13).

Persuasive Essay On The Issue Of The Media
There are 7.442 billion people living on this planet as we speak. That is a very large number. Now let
me give you a couple more numbers to go along with it. 70 million people; these are the individuals
who live with an eating disorder every single day. 36.7 million; these are the people who live with
HIV/AIDS in the world. The authors of the readings for which this argument comes from all agree that
one of the main reasons that these epidemics have become so out of hand is the media involvement. I
believe that if we were more educated about the subject matter at hand, we could find affordable
working treatments that these individuals need. Media is the main problem for creating out of
proportion ideas about illnesses that are truly a problem, but no a reason for people to divide. One side
of the spectrum says that the media involvement should be limited, while the other side of the
spectrum says that the media involvement should end. I believe that the media involvement should be
both limited and ended in certain ways.
The problem that we have constantly begun to hear about is the amount of media that becomes
involved in controversial topics or in personal affairs. Media has become an outrageous way for
people to be involved in the personal matters of others lives such as, celebrities and royals, but now
the media has been used to target certain groups and torment them for their own personal gain. This
has been done during the AIDS epidemic and the sudden rise in the

Beethoven s 9th Symphony Analysis
This production of Beethoven s 9th Symphony was presented by the Lubbock Symphony Orchestra in
conjunction with The Lubbock Chorale and The Texas Tech University Choir. The performance was
held in the Lubbock Civic Center Theatre on October 13th and 14th at 7:30p.m. As a performer in the
University Choir, I was required to attend and perform both nights which allowed me the opportunity
to observe two different audiences. The audience on the night of the 13th was obviously better
prepared to handle such a long and mercurial major work. This was evident in the audience s reactions
to the ends of movements. The long standing and unwritten rule of waiting until the end of a major
work to clap was followed silently and diligently. This audience was mostly made up of adults
obviously over the age of fifty that are regular attendees and patrons of the Lubbock Symphony
Orchestra. Following thereafter in group size were the students, specifically Texas Tech and
surrounding area high school students. At this performance the amount of attending children was few
to none, as I could not see or hear any. The second audience mimicked the preceding audience in size
and age, however, this audience s reaction of clapping at the end of movements was highly undesired
by the performers, Maestro Cho, and the remaining members of the audience that understand the
unwritten rules of attending these types of concerts.
These types of reactions by inexperienced audiences make listening to or concentrating on great
performances of beautiful music very difficult. Not only do these translate to distractions for the
performers, but applause betwixt the movements can interrupt the flow of the work and thwart the
intended effect that the composer and conductor wish to have on the audience. This audience reaction
can also take away and distract from the atmosphere of the performance, which, in this case was a
relatively small and intimate concert hall.
Because this concert was only a performance of Beethoven s 9th Symphony, I will react to movements
two and four, the Scherzo and Recitative respectively. The Scherzo (second) movement was
characterized by Beethoven s ability to keep the constant presto eighth note motive throughout the

Operation Market Garden Battle Analysis
Battle Analysis: Lesson learned Operation Market Garden was the biggest airborne operation in
history. It was a real attempt to use airborne in a strategic role in Europe. Operation Market Garden
was unsuccessful Allied offensive that launched on 17 September 1944. The execution of the
operation consisted of two sub operations. An airborne forces operation, code named Market, was to
seize, and secure key bridges along the Rhine river to facilitate rapid movement for British ground
forces. A ground forces operation, code named Garden, was to link up with airborne forces at the north
of Arnhem. British General Bernard Montgomery was the brain behind Operation Market Garden. He
wanted to by pass the Siegfried Line, German massive line of defense, by crossing the Rhine, then
into the industrial area in Northern Germany and then onto Berlin to end the war. Allied offensive was
the largest airborne operation up to that date. It consisted of 1,545 troop carriers, 478 gliders, 3,500
glider men and 16,500 paratroopers (Fox, 1994, p.1). the initial phase of airborne forces operation was
a success, however British paratroopers failed to secure the key bridge of Arnhem. The ground forces
that were supposed to link up with airborne forces, faced fierce attacks by 88mm guns and
Panzerfausts. The operation lasted nine day, in which Allied forces fought the German forces in and
around the city of Arnhem, Nijmegen, and Eindhoven. Allied ground forces failed to advance and

Theme Of Ethics In Erin Brockovich
The movie, Erin Brockovich, is based on a true story revolves around a file clerk named, Erin
Brockovich, who represented the community of Hinkley against the electric corporation Pacific Gas
and Electric Company, PG E. PG E faced disputes of ethical dilemmas and groundwater
contamination lawsuits after Erin uncovered and exposed its unethical business practices. PG E
operated a compressor plant in Hinkley and hexavalent chromium, which could cause severe medical
issues, was used to cool down the machines used at the plants to prevent corrosion in the machinery.
The company failed to take the step of adding liner to the ponds at their plant, which led to
groundwater pollution that affected the water near the compressor plant. PG E was involved in more
unethical behaviors followed by this initial breach of ethics, such as deception, bribery, and cover up
evidence of chromium use.
As Erin spent time filing documents as a clerk, she came across a case against PG E that her law firm
handled on behalf of the residents of Hinkley. Erin went to Hinkley to investigate the underlying
problems that led to those ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
According to Rawl, Justice is the balance between collective equality and individual freedom. It is
critical for one to be granted with his/her freedom to implement any strategies to elevate one s
business; however, if it interferes with other people s well being, then the justice system becomes out
of balance. PG E ultimately ranked their interest over the well being of the whole community.
According to Emmanuel Kant, deception is always wrong and one should do whatever is right no
matter what the consequences. Evidently, PG E violated Kant s Categorical Imperative theory, by
deceiving that they were using Chromium III instead of

Benjamin Franklin s Virtues To Create A Perfect Moral Society
One of Benjamin Franklin s goals in life was to create a perfectly moral society. Is there even such a
thing as a perfectly moral society? How would one go about forming this unheard of thing? Franklin
observed people and used his own knowledge to form his list of thirteen virtues, behaviors that
conduct high moral standards. Could these virtues create a perfect society? In order for Franklin s plan
to work, every person must follow all thirteen of these virtues. A benefit comes from each thing
Franklin listed. One of these benefits is creating good citizens. A good citizen is someone who
respects their town, government, and fellow peers. Temperance and moderation are good qualities to
have because that means everyone can control themselves. Silence also comes in handy because it can
keep people from getting offended or hurt by another person s words. Order keeps everything running
smoothly, even in time of disaster. Tranquility can ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Chasity is one of the few I would choose to remove. While it does show self control, I do not believe
that determines if you are a good citizen. I also believe moderation could be removed because it is
closely related with temperance. Silence is another thing that can be good at certain times, but can also
be bad at other times. Sometimes people need to speak their opinions; otherwise, nothing would ever
be changed. Everything would stay exactly the same and I don t think they would be good for society.
Cleanliness is also another virtue that does not relate to being a good citizen. While it does have
something to do with your character and appearance, it does not affect your morals and ability to be a
good citizen. These are the only revisions I would make to Franklin s plan. I see no need for anything
else to be removed or added. He covered the basics, but in some sense he went a little overboard.
Although these are good qualities to have, do they make you a good human

The Health And Weight Loss
Have you ever wondered why Coca Cola now comes in versions such as light and zero ? If you have,
chances are that you mentally answered your question by saying that the company read your mind and
was fulfilling your desire to lose weight while still indulging in your favorite beverage. However, the
relationship between you and the food giants is quite the opposite. What you think is healthy or
unhealthy is based on research funded by companies that profit off of your food choices, currently,
much of the research regarding health and weight loss is funded by companies such as Coca Cola and
Kellogg therefore therefore, you are the one fulfilling their desire (CBS, 2015).
The idea that large companies and the media dictate our daily lives has slowly become common
knowledge. Therefore, one must be cautious in regards of the sources he or she trusts. For instance,
Steve Blair, who conducts research that supports the idea that obesity in America is due to lack of
physical activity as opposed to calorie consumption has much of his research funded by Coca Cola, a
company which is largely known for its calorie packed drinks and snacks. Moreover, while Blair s
research might be supported by relevant data, so was the research that justified smoking. Nonetheless,
the way data is analyzed can be extremely biased based on who is paying for the collection and
analysis of such data (Freedhoff, 2015).
The increase in the obese population is both an opportunity and a liability to

American vs. Italian culture: worlds apart
By definition, culture is a combination of collectively shared traits, values and traditions that
distinguish one human group from another (Hofstede, 1991). Thus culture is in essence that heart and
spirit that makes each country and its people unique and different. And in that sense, America and
Italy are literally at the opposite sides of nearly every aspect of culture. Being an Italian American, I
have grown in a family where these two opposites meet and blend together. Albeit the differences of
these two cultures are nearly innumerable, the most commonly recognized and distinct ones lay in the
areas of family relations, eating habits and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Hall (1983, pp.42 54): monochronic (US) vs. polychronic (Italy). That means that in the States the
whole life is fitted into a rigid schedule and time itself is a precious commodity. Conversely, as a
polychronic nation, Italians are more concerned with the people and the present moment than the
schedules (Hall, p. 42) and perceive time as something flexible like a flowing river. As a result,
Italians enjoy a much slower pace of life than Americans. For example, nearly every food beverage
business in the US has to go options, whereas in Italy it is not common since people tend to enjoy their
meals slowly, without haste. Consequently, the Italians tend to be more relaxed and laid back about
nearly everything: what is not done now, will be done later. Eventually. Sooner, or later no stress there.
This list of differences between American and Italian cultures could go on and on, even though the
globalization through the new technologies has driven countries and cultures closer together than ever
before. But still, US and Italy present nearly opposite perspectives on the core values and behavior
patterns in life: Italy being more conservative and tradition oriented in family relations, eating habits
and general pace of life, while US valuing independence and efficiency above

The Causes Of Natural Disasters
Three people during a dangerous hurricane try to stay alive, and one person walks to the bathroom.
While he is walking to the bathroom a window breaks and a piece of glass cuts him in the neck. They
can not call the ambulance because of the hurricane. He later dies in her own home from blood loss.
(bleeding to death)I wanted to research on this natural disasters because I want to help make the world
safe and its life in the world. I care about the destruction of these natural disasters. There can be a
building that is one billion dollars that is just built, then it was destroyed during a tornado or
hurricane. The main point or question i m overall trying to cover is that why don t we try to stop or
predict and help fight the disasters in the world. We can help in a lot of ways to help stop many things
from dying or the destruction it causes.I think I can, I will stop this by telling the world that we can
help prevent these natural disasters by helping each other to help predict and someday prevent them.
There are many reasons to help prevent or stop these natural disasters. These solutions are available
because of the fact that we have a lot more people than we need to help prevent or stop these natural
disasters. These solutions include building, donating, and in general stop doing stuff that is dangerous
during a natural disaster. One of these is building dams or walls to prevent tsunamis if the wall is big
and strong to prevent from these natural disasters from hitting.

Speech On Procrastination
Procrastination, a college student s worst enemy, but closest friend. I ve developed this habit where I
wait until the very last minute doing an assignment. It has gotten to the point where the clock is
ticking down to the last few minutes and I am sitting at my desk just now starting the assignment.
What do I do to get in this sticky situation you ask? I do everything but the thing I m supposed to do.
Although I would have earned better grades from doing things days before it s due, I ve mastered the
technique of putting it off till the last minute. It s a bad habit I picked up, but not one that i ve tried to
quit.
RECEIVING THE ASSIGNMENT
Procrastinating comes in a few stages, the first is receiving the assignment. Receiving the assignment
and due date sparked the lies of oh I ll start this as soon as I get home, or I m actually going to get this
done early so I don t have to worry about it. So i psych myself up to be motivated to finish it early
although it never works out that way.
The Professor of the class usually makes a comment of This isn t something you can do the night
before it s due. Well obviously in college anything is possible, and they know that at least half of the
class is going to do it the night before its due anyways. As soon as the class gets over the paper gets
stuffed in my backpack and remains forgotten until I stumble upon it crumpled in the bottom of the
bag. Realistically, i do know about the assignment it s just filed in the part of

Mexican Women in Mexican Revolution
Richard Falcon wonderfully directs the play Soladeras , by Ruben Amavizca Murua, It is stated in the
Play Bill that Richard Falcon is considered an actors director because he knows how to draw the best

was like a welcoming zepher of wind during any season.
Powerful, yet comforting. Humiliating, yet humbling. I felt as though I were reliving the engagments

equality, the felonies of racial disparagies, predudices, and abuse. These women also alternated
between provider roles of cook, launderer, companion, housekeeper, child bearer, educator, councilor,

Emmett Till Reflection
1. The whole story and trial of Emmett Till was probably one of the most saddest stories I have heard
about. What surprised me most is the reason why they killed Emmett. This just showed how much
blacks were looked down upon. Nowadays, women get whistled at all the time by all different types of
men. This is just a rude gesture to whistle at a women, however we wouldn t brutally murder them.
What also surprised me was how they killed him. The murderers did not have to savagely kill him.
This changed my view on history and actually opened my eyes. I think we need to be better educated
on the subject that everybody tries to ignore.
2. During the trial, businesses put out jars to collect money for the defense of the two murderers. This
shows that everyone was on the murderers side. The community views the white race as the superior
race, and that is why the murderers were not guilty. Society then, was not a time that we should be
proud of. Those murderers should have been ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If I could interview those children now when they are around 60, I would ask why did they do that?
Pretending to shoot someone and laugh, what did that symbolize and what did that mean to them? I
would also ask how they viewed race growing up. What was race to them? I would also ask what if it
was the year 2015, would they still do that as kids? I would expect them to be surprised about the first
question. As children, we do not understand what we are doing, but we should know right from wrong
and laughing at someone, pretending to kill them is unacceptable. I would expect them to answer what
it meant to do that and I think they would explain that they were only kids and that it was a different
time and society in 1955. I would expect them to answer how they felt about race growing with
obviously saying that the colored people were looked down on. If they were to do that now in 2015,
they probably would not do that in the first place, it is a completely different time period and everyone

free of major grammatical and spelling errors. Be specific points will be deducted for vague or

lacerations (cuts) on her legs from flying glass, when a bottle of carbonated soda exploded in a

Clearly state how each of these two tenets should be interpreted when considering this situation. Code
10 will be of great importance. Code ten states that the officer should never tolerate harassment which
is what the other attorney was trying to do. In other terms, Dan should not let the soda company as
well as the grocery store owner, lawyers harass him with words through twisting of facts. Instead he
should use his skills and expertise and defend the victim. Code two will also be very effective in this
case. The code states that he should provide advisory services to the clients and consider further
disclosure if warranted. b) How would you recommend Dan respond? Specifically state the action you
recommend, and justify your response, drawing guidance from the ethical tenets which you identified
above. From the scenario and the codes and ethics of his work, Dan should state the facts that the
explosion is the one that caused the glass to fall and break down hence causing the injury to the victim
foot. The breaking was spontaneous. 2) During an oil refinery startup, it is discovered that a drain

The Debate Over Home Schooling
The Debate Over Home Schooling
What is home schooling, and who is choosing to be home schooled? In this serious time of concern
about the standards of the public education system, it is found that in the United States, the number of
parents deciding to home school their kids is increasing. These parents believe that the education
system provided by their local schools is unsatisfactory compared to what they could do at home.
Home schooling has become more common in the past thirty years and has even started a trend
throughout the states. An estimation of a 235,000 335,000 increase of the number of home schooled
children within twenty years was reported by the U.S. Department of Education. Since then, that
number grown to an astonishing number of 1.7 million, and should continue to grow at a rate of 15
percent a year. These numbers are considered low because it is not necessary in all states to notify the
Department of Education when parents decide to home school their children. Activists such as David
Gutterson explain home schooling as the attempt to receive an education at a place other than an
institution. Children who are home schooled spend most of a normal school day learning in the
environment of their homes. Unlike traditional schools, home schooled children s parents are their
teachers, which allows for variances in curriculum programs. Some parents choose to follow a more
traditional curriculum while others allow their students (children) to learn about

Social Work Values
Social work is a vast field with complex and numerous factors that can create confusion on what
exactly the social work profession is. Many theories and values have been assigned to social work
based scientific development and studies, assumptions and inherent beliefs, which can only add to the
chaotic understanding of the profession. Although the National Association of Social Workers
(NASW) was only founded in 1955, (Platt and Cooreman 2001, pg. 113) social work has been utilized
for centuries, including Henry VIII of England who passed an act mandating, local parishes to take
care of their destitute and create a procedure for the collection and administration of donations to the
poor. (Platt and Cooreman 2001, pg. 92). Discussed in the following is a more concrete definition of
social work along with core values needed to be acquired to support the practice of social work
effectively. Social work can be defined as, promoting social justice and social change with and on
behalf of clients. (NASW, 2008, Preamble) Simply put, social workers are there to advocate and
promote a more tolerable world in which everyone in society is treated equally, with fairness and are
provided the same opportunities. In addition to this definition, some value assumptions have to be
clearly made in order to support the profession of social work. The values that best compliment the
above definition are most suitably described in the National Association of Social Workers (NASW)

he had been up since 7:00 a.m. listening to a conference call and that this was the second one he was

Strategic Challenges Between Samsung And Eskom
Introduction
Strategic management plays a vital role in most organisations as it consists of formulating and
implementing the company s goals; this is done by taking into account the available resources and
doing an analysis of the internal and external environment (Takalkar, 2014). The author of this essay
will be identifying and analysing a significant strategic challenge that was faced by a local and global
entity from two different industries, furthermore an external and internal analysis will be given. Lastly
the author will address how the two organisations were able to overcome the strategic challenge in
order to strengthen the strategic positions of the organisations. The local entity that was chosen is
Eskom which falls part of the energy industry and for the global entity Samsung was chosen as it falls
part of the technology industry. The differences found between Samsung and Eskom are that Samsung
provides products that can be seen as a want for its consumers whereas Eskom provides a service
which is a need for the general public. A similarity that can be found between the two entities is that
both these companies are leading players within the industry they belong to. The reason these two
organisations ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One of the strengths that can be identified at Eskom is the fact that it is the main power supplier which
gives Eskom a competitive advantage. The company is also in support of Black Economic
Empowerment and has a highly skilled workforce. With that said the organisation also has weaknesses
and at Eskom an evident weakness is the lack of clear decision making when it comes to policies, such
as the Medupi delay caused by poor decision making. Furthermore Eskom has had labour issues like
the employee strike during the construction of a power station, this lead to a standstill and delay in

Homeless To Harvard Ethos Pathos Logos
In the movie Homeless to Harvard I believe that Peter Levin the director used ethos, pathos and logos
to prove to people that no matter what, never give up. Liz Murray narrates a story of when she was
once poor, homeless and the daughter of two drug addicted parents. The audience can be for anyone
that can relate to the situation. The most used rhetorical device was pathos which is what appeals to
people s emotions to grab their attentions, following second would be ethos which appeals to how
much of an expert someone is at something, and the last rhetorical device would be logos which is the
appeal to someone s reasoning or logic.
In the video, Liz s living condition wasn t the greatest she was living in a house with dirty dishes all
over the place, a dirty bathtub which ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is a great example of pathos because it shows someone how upsetting her living conditions were
and what she had to deal with. I ve been in a situation where I was helping my mom clean houses and
the bathrooms are completely filthy. The bathtubs have a ring of mold around the edges, the toilets
tinted brown and the sinks are covered in toothpaste residue and shaved hairs. Another example would
be the scene when Liz is being taken away by Children
Youth Services (CYS). While she was exiting the door, her father was reaching for a bent spoon to
cook up on and string like object to put around his arm to shoot up. This appeals to the audience s
emotion because it s upsetting that Liz had to be taken away from the only parent she actually thought
was interesting. Around the age of seven I met with CYS maybe once a month to see how things were
going between my mom and dad. Eventually they saw the problem and my dad was taken away from
me for the ungrateful things he s done. Not only is pathos a great way to appeal the message but ethos
is helpful too to show that someone is educated on a certain subject. Liz is an expert on many things.
For one she s an expert on being homeless. Even

The Similarities Between Sal And Lex In Jurassic Park
All the characters are different, but they all have a few key similarities. Tom wanted to be independent
and noble, but Sal and Lex both wanted to understand, from Sal wanting to know about her mom the
Lex craving to know her situation and safety. This shows how there can be connections between books
that do not have the same plot, story, characters, or even timeline as others.
For example, Sal s mother passed away in a bus accident and this consequently compels her to want to
know more. This is important for the reader to know as it helps them understand what is happening as
the story develops. It also helps them understand the reason that Sal went on this road trip, to see her
mother s grave. Because of this, it helps the reader understand that Sal is not bringing her mother
home physically, but mentally will never forget this journey. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Lex grew up in a suburban home with everything she ever wanted, but now that her parents are getting

accustomed to a lavish lifestyle, not having her life torn up and being in danger from savage

Molar Mass Of Butane And Unknown
Molar Mass of Butane and unknown
Abstract:
The purpose of this lab is to find the molar mass of mixed gases in a lighter, and to calculate the exact
mixture of gases in the lighter. The results of this lab were the mass of the lighter, as 100 mL of water
was displaced, was 0.27g, 0.17g, and 0.28g. The molar masses of the gasses for three trials were 64.3
g/mol, 40.5 g/mol, and 66.7 g/mol.
Background:
The purpose of this lab is to find the molar mass of mixed gases in a lighter, and to calculate the exact
mixture of gases in the lighter. While collecting the volume of Butane gas in a lighter, the molar mass
can also be determined. When attempting to find the molar mass, water displacement is the best
method to use. This can be determined because the equal volumes of all gases contain equal number of
particles, so long as they are measured at the same temperature and pressure. Ideal gas law is the
chemistry involved with this experiment. The equations M=mRT/PV and PV=nRT can be seen
throughout this experiment.
Pre Lab questions:
The Ideal gas law demonstrates a relationship between different values in the equation PV=nRT. The
ideal gas law will be used to find the molar mass of butane.
The ideal gas law can be changed with the equation n=m/M. It can be seen that moles equals mass
over molar mass. This can be changed, and substituted into the Ideal gas law to find the molar mass.
The equation goes from PV=nRT to M=mRT/PV.
Molar Mass is the mass of a given substance. It

Research Paper On Sulfur
I choose Sulfur because of it s bright yellow color which really catches your attention. I also found it
very interesting how much damage sulfur really is to the human. Plus is a very hard element to locate
due to the fact that it can mainly be found by hot springs or volcanoes. Sulfur, also spelled sulphur, is
a chemical element with the symbol S and atomic number of 16. It is an abundant non metal and at
room temperature is a bright yellow crystalline solid. Chemically, sulfur combines with all elements
except for gold, platinum, iridium, nitrogen, tellurium, iodine, and the noble gases. Sulfur forms over
30 solid allotropes, more than any other element. Allotropes are different forms in which an element
can exist. I picked this element because ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

can be found near hot springs and volcanic areas in many parts of the world. Sulfur is commonly
mined in Indonesia, Chile, and Japan. Historically Sicily, Italy was a large source of sulfur in the
Industrial Revolution. Sulfur can be found in salt deposits along the Gulf of Mexico and evaporites in

Job analysis is often referred to as the corner stone of HR activities because almost every HR
management process includes some type of information gathered from job analysis. Job analysis
provides knowledge for the following HR processes: work re design, workforce planning, selection,
training and development, performance management, career planning, and job evaluation (Steen, Noe,

Application Of Low Power Integrated Intelligent Sensors
2 Research Motivation and Significance Applications of low power integrated intelligent sensors [1 8]
have been prolific in recent years, including, for instance, in environmental observation [9 11],
security surveillance [12, 13], infrastructure monitoring and communication [14 17], and biomedical
health care monitoring [18 21]. In particular, as the baby boomers approach retirement age, medical
expenses become significant. For example, in 2014, health care accounted for 28% of US federal
spending [22]. One major problem with current health care systems is that sensing and processing
medical data require significant resources. To alleviate this problem, wearable medical devices [23 27]
are expected to provide automatic monitoring and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The design challenges of the aforementioned intelligent sensors originate from their high density
circuits, especially DSP circuits performing multiply and accumulate (MAC), i.e., adders and
coefficient multipliers (DSP algorithms usually involve many MAC operations), which require a large
circuit area and high power consumption. This is one of the most critical problems in integrated
intelligent sensor design. For example, in [34] a seizure detector consumed more than 50% of the
circuit area and power in a System on a Chip (SOC), even though an advanced lookup table (LUT)
method was applied, which saved more than 50% of the total gate count in the digital filters [35]. The
power cost of the chip may require battery replacement every six hours, which is not convenient or
feasible for many patients. Essentially, the large circuit area and high power consumption of MAC
circuits limit system performance and raise chip costs. Medical applications generally require higher
resolution and higher reliability, which only exacerbates the problem. One promising solution to the
above challenges is Delta Sigma technology. A Delta Sigma Modulator (DSM) converts an analog
input signal to a 1 bit Delta Sigma modulated digital bit stream, as shown in Fig. 2 (a). Compared with
conventional multi bit binary systems, the Delta Sigma system has several advantages: (1) a Delta
Sigma bit stream can

The Death Penalty In Australia
Introduction~ The death penalty has always been one of the most debated issues in Australia. In most
countries in the developed world, the death penalty is illegal. I, however believe that the death penalty
is an important way of keeping all Australians safe.
Body 1~ The crimes of rape, torture, treason, kidnapping, stealing and murder are awful. We can
prevent these from happening by bringing back the death penalty, by following this adjustment their
will be minor crimes being held. In my opinion If someone murdered an innocent victim they should
therefore, be killed there is no question about it. The death penalty can deter people from committing
serious crimes and therefore make Australia a safer country.

PAD 525: Constitution Administrative Law

January 29, 2012
Was there ever a period in history where interracial marriages and sex among people of different races
was considered illegal? As absurd as this idea sounds, the answer is yes. Astonishingly, less than 40
years ago marrying someone of a different race was considered illegal. Black people could not be with
white people it just couldn t happen. These statutes date back to colonial times, around the 1600s,
which at this time helped to maintain the racial caste system and expand slavery. Two particular

In November 1881, the plaintiff in error, Tony Pace, a negro man, and Mary J. Cox, a white woman,
were indicted under section 4189, in a circuit court of Alabama, for living together in a state of
adultery or fornication, and were tried, convicted, and sentenced, each to two years of imprisonment in
the state penitentiary (http://laws.findlaw.com/us/106/583.html). On appeal to the Supreme Court of
the state the judgment was affirmed, Pace brought the case here on writ of error, insisting that the act
under which he was indicted and convicted is in conflict with the concluding clause of the first section
of the Fourteenth Amendment of the Constitution, which declares that no state shall deny to any
person the equal protection of the laws [106 U.S. 583, 584]. Loving v. Virginia originates from the
Supreme Court of Appeals of Virginia in 1967, very many years after Pace v. Alabama. Once again,
Anti Miscegenation Statutes come back into the big picture. This case is landmark in the sense that it
presents a constitutional question never presented in the courts in history: whether a statutory scheme
adopted by the State of Virginia to prevent marriages between persons solely on the basis of racial
classifications violates the Equal Protection and Due Process Clauses of the Fourteenth Amendment.
In June of 1958 two residents of Virginia, Mildred Jeter, a Negro woman, and Richard Loving, a white
man, were married in the District of Columbia pursuant to its laws

Theme Of Deceit In The Odyssey
Leading themes in The Odyssey include humility, perseverance, and deceit. Deceit guides some of the
characters actions, and it also moves the story forward. The poem showcases deception as a common
tool among both the antagonists and the protagonists. Each group utilizes their wits with various
intentions ranging from maintaining fidelity, self preservation, and murder. Their lies and illusions
usually solve their problems and allow them to help others. For example, Odysseus s deceptions help
him defeat adversaries and also help him return home. He and other characters deploy duplicity to
achieve better ends, and that shows that duplicity in the poem is not always negative. Furthermore, the
deceiving actions of the characters also reveal that skills in deceit are valuable and critical to the tale,
and that the original storytellers respected those skills. The Ancient Greeks valued the ability to
deceive as evidenced by The Odyssey through the depiction of certain characters such as Penelope,
Odysseus, Athena, and Hermes. By the poem s telling of Penelope s story, it shows that people end up
respecting skills in deceit and cleverness. Penelope s story goes as follows: she resorts to deceit in
order to remain faithful to her husband. No one in the poem disapproves of her deceitful actions
except the people she dupes. Afterward, readers remember Penelope for her unwavering fidelity, and
also for her tricks to keep it. The first trick readers encounter involves Penelope

Symbolism In The Open Boat By Stephen Crane
Undoubtedly, Stephen Crane s Open Boat is regarded as one of the finest and most intriguing short
story written by an author with a naturalistic point of view or perspective. Stephen sets up the story
based on his real life experience thereby bringing out the intrinsic reality to his audience using
symbolism, poetry, and imagery. Perhaps the most intriguing naturalistic approach of the Open Boat is
the way Stephen expresses the themes in the short story with an ironic twist regarding the vastness of
the universe and the insignificance of man. As such, Stephen Crane s short story, The Open Boat, is a
true depiction of the tag of war between the unpredictable cosmic universe and man exposing the
themes of determination for survival, mortality, friendship, with an exquisite touch of other devices
such as poetry, symbolism or imagery, and tone. This paper aims at dissecting this subject matter
through a detailed analysis of the plot created throughout the novel. Since the story is based on the
true life experience of Stephen Crane, the setting of the story, therefore, is determined by the actual
event off the coast of Florida. As mentioned in the story, the setting area of the story is the Mosquito
Inlet. Based on the occurrence of the real event, the story is contextualized within the period of
January 1897 (enotes 7). The main theme expressed by Stephen Crane in the story is nature s
indifference towards man or nature versus man. The author elaborates the realization of

Over a few Stegmaier beers on Thanksgiving night, my father joked about his latest predicament, and

My father spoke freely about Eddie Kuharcik, and his role in starting my father in business. I could

In all the time my father talked about Eddie and the good old days on the Heights, he never once

The Reality Of Television Programs
Today s television programs are very different from the television programs that were shown over fifty
years ago. The shows in the past portrayed a modest conservative family. These families consist of a
hardworking man and a stay at home woman, married raising their own biological children. As the
years went by, television has started to portray a more liberal definition of what a family means in
today s world. Because of today s TV shows, there are different ideas about what a family should look
like.
Families on TV are not always a married couple containing one man and one woman raising their own
children. We now have many shows that support gay rights when it comes to marriage and being
parents. The hit comedy Modern Family has the funny loveable characters of Mitchell and Cameron.
They adopted a baby girl from Vietnam. The series also shows the wedding between the two men, as
well as the comical outcomes when they try to raise their daughter the best way possible. As Greg
Graffin wrote in his article Anarchy in the Tenth Grade It is also a shining example of how easy it is to
follow the party line and champion a bandwagon mentality which only motivates me to keep fighting
for originality. (3) This is seen on the show The Fosters , a girl named Callie is placed in a foster home
with a lesbian couple and their other adopted children. On this show the couple showed more love and
support than the previous foster homes she was placed in, that consisted of the usual

Aeneas to the long history that followed from him: and that was the origin of the Latin nation, the
Lords of Alba, and the proud battlements of Rome (I, 6 7). Soon after wards, when he has noted the
obstacles that the Trojans meet in their wanderings, he again ends a period in the similar note: Such
was the cost in heavy toil of beginning the life of Rome (I, 33). Once again, when Venus complains

The Primacy Of Salomon V Salomon s The Corporate Veil
In this light the Supreme Court, in order to arrive at a fair outcome for the wife, managed to set aside
the companies separate legal personality without actually lifting the corporate veil. As a result of this
ruling, it is lucid that the primacy of Salomon v Salomon has been affirmed. Nonetheless, the case
itself is significant as it also recognized for the first time that piercing the corporate veil is possible;
albeit in limited circumstances. As such, rather then being referred to as an archetype of the courts
reluctance towards corporate disregard, the case suggests the antitheses. Evidence of this can be found
in Lord Sumption s declaration that a recognition of a limited power to pierce the corporate veil, in
carefully defined circumstances, is necessary if the law is not to be disarmed in the face of abuse . In
addition, Lord Sumption s attempt in Prest to formulate a principled method to veil piercing, which in
itself will be discussed in greater detail later in this essay, has provided a renewed beginning to an
already complex area of company law (tan chang article). In essence, while it is true that the threshold
in which the corporate veil may be pierced has been raised, a detailed analysis of the case illustrates
that the abuse of corporate personality will not go unpunished (tera firm/mcardle). Having considered
the ratio of Prest, when assessing the law in relation to corporate disregard as a whole it becomes
evident that corporate personality has

  • 3. Persuasive Essay On The Issue Of The Media There are 7.442 billion people living on this planet as we speak. That is a very large number. Now let me give you a couple more numbers to go along with it. 70 million people; these are the individuals who live with an eating disorder every single day. 36.7 million; these are the people who live with HIV/AIDS in the world. The authors of the readings for which this argument comes from all agree that one of the main reasons that these epidemics have become so out of hand is the media involvement. I believe that if we were more educated about the subject matter at hand, we could find affordable working treatments that these individuals need. Media is the main problem for creating out of proportion ideas about illnesses that are truly a problem, but no a reason for people to divide. One side of the spectrum says that the media involvement should be limited, while the other side of the spectrum says that the media involvement should end. I believe that the media involvement should be both limited and ended in certain ways. The problem that we have constantly begun to hear about is the amount of media that becomes involved in controversial topics or in personal affairs. Media has become an outrageous way for people to be involved in the personal matters of others lives such as, celebrities and royals, but now the media has been used to target certain groups and torment them for their own personal gain. This has been done during the AIDS epidemic and the sudden rise in the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Beethoven s 9th Symphony Analysis This production of Beethoven s 9th Symphony was presented by the Lubbock Symphony Orchestra in conjunction with The Lubbock Chorale and The Texas Tech University Choir. The performance was held in the Lubbock Civic Center Theatre on October 13th and 14th at 7:30p.m. As a performer in the University Choir, I was required to attend and perform both nights which allowed me the opportunity to observe two different audiences. The audience on the night of the 13th was obviously better prepared to handle such a long and mercurial major work. This was evident in the audience s reactions to the ends of movements. The long standing and unwritten rule of waiting until the end of a major work to clap was followed silently and diligently. This audience was mostly made up of adults obviously over the age of fifty that are regular attendees and patrons of the Lubbock Symphony Orchestra. Following thereafter in group size were the students, specifically Texas Tech and surrounding area high school students. At this performance the amount of attending children was few to none, as I could not see or hear any. The second audience mimicked the preceding audience in size and age, however, this audience s reaction of clapping at the end of movements was highly undesired by the performers, Maestro Cho, and the remaining members of the audience that understand the unwritten rules of attending these types of concerts. These types of reactions by inexperienced audiences make listening to or concentrating on great performances of beautiful music very difficult. Not only do these translate to distractions for the performers, but applause betwixt the movements can interrupt the flow of the work and thwart the intended effect that the composer and conductor wish to have on the audience. This audience reaction can also take away and distract from the atmosphere of the performance, which, in this case was a relatively small and intimate concert hall. Because this concert was only a performance of Beethoven s 9th Symphony, I will react to movements two and four, the Scherzo and Recitative respectively. The Scherzo (second) movement was characterized by Beethoven s ability to keep the constant presto eighth note motive throughout the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Operation Market Garden Battle Analysis Battle Analysis: Lesson learned Operation Market Garden was the biggest airborne operation in history. It was a real attempt to use airborne in a strategic role in Europe. Operation Market Garden was unsuccessful Allied offensive that launched on 17 September 1944. The execution of the operation consisted of two sub operations. An airborne forces operation, code named Market, was to seize, and secure key bridges along the Rhine river to facilitate rapid movement for British ground forces. A ground forces operation, code named Garden, was to link up with airborne forces at the north of Arnhem. British General Bernard Montgomery was the brain behind Operation Market Garden. He wanted to by pass the Siegfried Line, German massive line of defense, by crossing the Rhine, then into the industrial area in Northern Germany and then onto Berlin to end the war. Allied offensive was the largest airborne operation up to that date. It consisted of 1,545 troop carriers, 478 gliders, 3,500 glider men and 16,500 paratroopers (Fox, 1994, p.1). the initial phase of airborne forces operation was a success, however British paratroopers failed to secure the key bridge of Arnhem. The ground forces that were supposed to link up with airborne forces, faced fierce attacks by 88mm guns and Panzerfausts. The operation lasted nine day, in which Allied forces fought the German forces in and around the city of Arnhem, Nijmegen, and Eindhoven. Allied ground forces failed to advance and support the ... PG E faced disputes of ethical dilemmas and groundwater contamination lawsuits after Erin uncovered and exposed its unethical business practices. PG E operated a compressor plant in Hinkley and hexavalent chromium, which could cause severe medical issues, was used to cool down the machines used at the plants to prevent corrosion in the machinery. The company failed to take the step of adding liner to the ponds at their plant, which led to groundwater pollution that affected the water near the compressor plant. PG E was involved in more unethical behaviors followed by this initial breach of ethics, such as deception, bribery, and cover up evidence of chromium use. As Erin spent time filing documents as a clerk, she came across a case against PG E that her law firm handled on behalf of the residents of Hinkley. • 7. Benjamin Franklin s Virtues To Create A Perfect Moral Society One of Benjamin Franklin s goals in life was to create a perfectly moral society. Is there even such a thing as a perfectly moral society? How would one go about forming this unheard of thing? Franklin observed people and used his own knowledge to form his list of thirteen virtues, behaviors that conduct high moral standards. Could these virtues create a perfect society? In order for Franklin s plan to work, every person must follow all thirteen of these virtues. A benefit comes from each thing Franklin listed. One of these benefits is creating good citizens. A good citizen is someone who respects their town, government, and fellow peers. Temperance and moderation are good qualities to have because that means everyone can control themselves. Silence also comes in handy because it can keep people from getting offended or hurt by another person s words. Order keeps everything running smoothly, even in time of disaster. Tranquility can ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Chasity is one of the few I would choose to remove. While it does show self control, I do not believe that determines if you are a good citizen. I also believe moderation could be removed because it is closely related with temperance. Silence is another thing that can be good at certain times, but can also be bad at other times. Sometimes people need to speak their opinions; otherwise, nothing would ever be changed. Everything would stay exactly the same and I don t think they would be good for society. Cleanliness is also another virtue that does not relate to being a good citizen. While it does have something to do with your character and appearance, it does not affect your morals and ability to be a good citizen. These are the only revisions I would make to Franklin s plan. I see no need for anything else to be removed or added. He covered the basics, but in some sense he went a little overboard. • 8. The Health And Weight Loss Have you ever wondered why Coca Cola now comes in versions such as light and zero ? If you have, chances are that you mentally answered your question by saying that the company read your mind and was fulfilling your desire to lose weight while still indulging in your favorite beverage. However, the relationship between you and the food giants is quite the opposite. What you think is healthy or unhealthy is based on research funded by companies that profit off of your food choices, currently, much of the research regarding health and weight loss is funded by companies such as Coca Cola and Kellogg therefore therefore, you are the one fulfilling their desire (CBS, 2015). The idea that large companies and the media dictate our daily lives has slowly become common knowledge. Therefore, one must be cautious in regards of the sources he or she trusts. For instance, Steve Blair, who conducts research that supports the idea that obesity in America is due to lack of physical activity as opposed to calorie consumption has much of his research funded by Coca Cola, a company which is largely known for its calorie packed drinks and snacks. Moreover, while Blair s research might be supported by relevant data, so was the research that justified smoking. Nonetheless, the way data is analyzed can be extremely biased based on who is paying for the collection and analysis of such data (Freedhoff, 2015). The increase in the obese population is both an opportunity and a liability to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. Italian Culture Vs American Culture Research Paper Student s Name Professor s Name Subject 06 October 2016 American vs. Italian culture: worlds apart By definition, culture is a combination of collectively shared traits, values and traditions that distinguish one human group from another (Hofstede, 1991). Thus culture is in essence that heart and spirit that makes each country and its people unique and different. And in that sense, America and Italy are literally at the opposite sides of nearly every aspect of culture. Being an Italian American, I have grown in a family where these two opposites meet and blend together. That means that in the States the whole life is fitted into a rigid schedule and time itself is a precious commodity. Conversely, as a polychronic nation, Italians are more concerned with the people and the present moment than the schedules (Hall, p. 42) and perceive time as something flexible like a flowing river. As a result, Italians enjoy a much slower pace of life than Americans. For example, nearly every food beverage business in the US has to go options, whereas in Italy it is not common since people tend to enjoy their meals slowly, without haste. Consequently, the Italians tend to be more relaxed and laid back about nearly everything: what is not done now, will be done later. Eventually. Sooner, or later no stress there. This list of differences between American and Italian cultures could go on and on, even though the globalization through the new technologies has driven countries and cultures closer together than ever before. But still, US and Italy present nearly opposite perspectives on the core values and behavior patterns in life: Italy being more conservative and tradition oriented in family relations, eating habits and general pace of life, while US valuing independence and efficiency above ... This is just a rude gesture to whistle at a women, however we wouldn t brutally murder them. What also surprised me was how they killed him. The murderers did not have to savagely kill him. This changed my view on history and actually opened my eyes. I think we need to be better educated on the subject that everybody tries to ignore. 2. During the trial, businesses put out jars to collect money for the defense of the two murderers. This shows that everyone was on the murderers side. • 17. The Debate Over Home Schooling The Debate Over Home Schooling What is home schooling, and who is choosing to be home schooled? In this serious time of concern about the standards of the public education system, it is found that in the United States, the number of parents deciding to home school their kids is increasing. These parents believe that the education system provided by their local schools is unsatisfactory compared to what they could do at home. Home schooling has become more common in the past thirty years and has even started a trend throughout the states. An estimation of a 235,000 335,000 increase of the number of home schooled children within twenty years was reported by the U.S. Department of Education. Since then, that number grown to an astonishing number of 1.7 million, and should continue to grow at a rate of 15 percent a year. These numbers are considered low because it is not necessary in all states to notify the Department of Education when parents decide to home school their children. Activists such as David Gutterson explain home schooling as the attempt to receive an education at a place other than an institution. Children who are home schooled spend most of a normal school day learning in the environment of their homes. Unlike traditional schools, home schooled children s parents are their teachers, which allows for variances in curriculum programs. Many theories and values have been assigned to social work based scientific development and studies, assumptions and inherent beliefs, which can only add to the chaotic understanding of the profession. Although the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) was only founded in 1955, (Platt and Cooreman 2001, pg. 113) social work has been utilized for centuries, including Henry VIII of England who passed an act mandating, local parishes to take care of their destitute and create a procedure for the collection and administration of donations to the poor. (Platt and Cooreman 2001, pg. 92). Discussed in the following is a more concrete definition of social work along with core values needed to be acquired to support the practice of social work effectively. Social work can be defined as, promoting social justice and social change with and on behalf of clients. (NASW, 2008, Preamble) Simply put, social workers are there to advocate and promote a more tolerable world in which everyone in society is treated equally, with fairness and are provided the same opportunities. Strategic Challenges Between Samsung And Eskom Introduction Strategic management plays a vital role in most organisations as it consists of formulating and implementing the company s goals; this is done by taking into account the available resources and doing an analysis of the internal and external environment (Takalkar, 2014). The author of this essay will be identifying and analysing a significant strategic challenge that was faced by a local and global entity from two different industries, furthermore an external and internal analysis will be given. Lastly the author will address how the two organisations were able to overcome the strategic challenge in order to strengthen the strategic positions of the organisations. The local entity that was chosen is Eskom which falls part of the energy industry and for the global entity Samsung was chosen as it falls part of the technology industry. The differences found between Samsung and Eskom are that Samsung provides products that can be seen as a want for its consumers whereas Eskom provides a service which is a need for the general public. The most used rhetorical device was pathos which is what appeals to people s emotions to grab their attentions, following second would be ethos which appeals to how much of an expert someone is at something, and the last rhetorical device would be logos which is the appeal to someone s reasoning or logic. Molar Mass Of Butane And Unknown Molar Mass of Butane and unknown Abstract: The purpose of this lab is to find the molar mass of mixed gases in a lighter, and to calculate the exact mixture of gases in the lighter. The results of this lab were the mass of the lighter, as 100 mL of water was displaced, was 0.27g, 0.17g, and 0.28g. The molar masses of the gasses for three trials were 64.3 g/mol, 40.5 g/mol, and 66.7 g/mol. Background: The purpose of this lab is to find the molar mass of mixed gases in a lighter, and to calculate the exact mixture of gases in the lighter. While collecting the volume of Butane gas in a lighter, the molar mass can also be determined. When attempting to find the molar mass, water displacement is the best method to use. This can be determined because the equal volumes of all gases contain equal number of particles, so long as they are measured at the same temperature and pressure. Ideal gas law is the chemistry involved with this experiment. The equations M=mRT/PV and PV=nRT can be seen throughout this experiment. Pre Lab questions: The Ideal gas law demonstrates a relationship between different values in the equation PV=nRT. The ideal gas law will be used to find the molar mass of butane. The ideal gas law can be changed with the equation n=m/M. It can be seen that moles equals mass over molar mass. This can be changed, and substituted into the Ideal gas law to find the molar mass. The equation goes from PV=nRT to M=mRT/PV. Molar Mass is the mass of a given substance. It ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Why is job analysis often referred to as the corner stone of HR activities? (2 Marks) Job analysis is often referred to as the corner stone of HR activities because almost every HR management process includes some type of information gathered from job analysis. Job analysis provides knowledge for the following HR processes: work re design, workforce planning, selection, training and development, performance management, career planning, and job evaluation (Steen, Noe, Hollenbeck, Gerhart, Wright, 2013, p.66 67). The information job analysis provides, acts as the building blocks to these HR activities, thus bringing an understanding to job analysis being referred to as the corner stone . 4. • 27. Application Of Low Power Integrated Intelligent Sensors 2 Research Motivation and Significance Applications of low power integrated intelligent sensors [1 8] have been prolific in recent years, including, for instance, in environmental observation [9 11], security surveillance [12, 13], infrastructure monitoring and communication [14 17], and biomedical health care monitoring [18 21]. In particular, as the baby boomers approach retirement age, medical expenses become significant. For example, in 2014, health care accounted for 28% of US federal spending [22]. One major problem with current health care systems is that sensing and processing medical data require significant resources. To alleviate this problem, wearable medical devices [23 27] are expected to provide automatic monitoring and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The design challenges of the aforementioned intelligent sensors originate from their high density circuits, especially DSP circuits performing multiply and accumulate (MAC), i.e., adders and coefficient multipliers (DSP algorithms usually involve many MAC operations), which require a large circuit area and high power consumption. This is one of the most critical problems in integrated intelligent sensor design. For example, in [34] a seizure detector consumed more than 50% of the circuit area and power in a System on a Chip (SOC), even though an advanced lookup table (LUT) method was applied, which saved more than 50% of the total gate count in the digital filters [35]. The power cost of the chip may require battery replacement every six hours, which is not convenient or feasible for many patients. Essentially, the large circuit area and high power consumption of MAC circuits limit system performance and raise chip costs. Medical applications generally require higher resolution and higher reliability, which only exacerbates the problem. One promising solution to the above challenges is Delta Sigma technology. A Delta Sigma Modulator (DSM) converts an analog input signal to a 1 bit Delta Sigma modulated digital bit stream, as shown in Fig. 2 (a). Compared with conventional multi bit binary systems, the Delta Sigma system has several advantages: (1) a Delta Sigma bit stream can ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 28. The Death Penalty In Australia Introduction~ The death penalty has always been one of the most debated issues in Australia. In most countries in the developed world, the death penalty is illegal. I, however believe that the death penalty is an important way of keeping all Australians safe. Body 1~ The crimes of rape, torture, treason, kidnapping, stealing and murder are awful. We can prevent these from happening by bringing back the death penalty, by following this adjustment their will be minor crimes being held. In my opinion If someone murdered an innocent victim they should therefore, be killed there is no question about it. The death penalty can deter people from committing serious crimes and therefore make Australia a safer country. Body 2~ The death penalty is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Hall PAD 525: Constitution Administrative Law Dr. Lee January 29, 2012 Was there ever a period in history where interracial marriages and sex among people of different races was considered illegal? As absurd as this idea sounds, the answer is yes. Astonishingly, less than 40 years ago marrying someone of a different race was considered illegal. Black people could not be with white people it just couldn t happen. These statutes date back to colonial times, around the 1600s, which at this time helped to maintain the racial caste system and expand slavery. In November 1881, the plaintiff in error, Tony Pace, a negro man, and Mary J. Cox, a white woman, were indicted under section 4189, in a circuit court of Alabama, for living together in a state of adultery or fornication, and were tried, convicted, and sentenced, each to two years of imprisonment in the state penitentiary (http://laws.findlaw.com/us/106/583.html). On appeal to the Supreme Court of the state the judgment was affirmed, Pace brought the case here on writ of error, insisting that the act under which he was indicted and convicted is in conflict with the concluding clause of the first section of the Fourteenth Amendment of the Constitution, which declares that no state shall deny to any person the equal protection of the laws [106 U.S. 583, 584]. Loving v. Virginia originates from the Supreme Court of Appeals of Virginia in 1967, very many years after Pace v. Alabama. Once again, Anti Miscegenation Statutes come back into the big picture. This case is landmark in the sense that it presents a constitutional question never presented in the courts in history: whether a statutory scheme adopted by the State of Virginia to prevent marriages between persons solely on the basis of racial classifications violates the Equal Protection and Due Process Clauses of the Fourteenth Amendment. In June of 1958 two residents of Virginia, Mildred Jeter, a Negro woman, and Richard Loving, a white man, were married in the District of Columbia pursuant to its laws ... • 30. Theme Of Deceit In The Odyssey Leading themes in The Odyssey include humility, perseverance, and deceit. Deceit guides some of the characters actions, and it also moves the story forward. The poem showcases deception as a common tool among both the antagonists and the protagonists. Each group utilizes their wits with various intentions ranging from maintaining fidelity, self preservation, and murder. Their lies and illusions usually solve their problems and allow them to help others. For example, Odysseus s deceptions help him defeat adversaries and also help him return home. He and other characters deploy duplicity to achieve better ends, and that shows that duplicity in the poem is not always negative. Furthermore, the deceiving actions of the characters also reveal that skills in deceit are valuable and critical to the tale, and that the original storytellers respected those skills. The Ancient Greeks valued the ability to deceive as evidenced by The Odyssey through the depiction of certain characters such as Penelope, Odysseus, Athena, and Hermes. By the poem s telling of Penelope s story, it shows that people end up respecting skills in deceit and cleverness. Penelope s story goes as follows: she resorts to deceit in order to remain faithful to her husband. No one in the poem disapproves of her deceitful actions except the people she dupes. Afterward, readers remember Penelope for her unwavering fidelity, and also for her tricks to keep it. The first trick readers encounter involves Penelope ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 31. Symbolism In The Open Boat By Stephen Crane Undoubtedly, Stephen Crane s Open Boat is regarded as one of the finest and most intriguing short story written by an author with a naturalistic point of view or perspective. Stephen sets up the story based on his real life experience thereby bringing out the intrinsic reality to his audience using symbolism, poetry, and imagery. Perhaps the most intriguing naturalistic approach of the Open Boat is the way Stephen expresses the themes in the short story with an ironic twist regarding the vastness of the universe and the insignificance of man. As such, Stephen Crane s short story, The Open Boat, is a true depiction of the tag of war between the unpredictable cosmic universe and man exposing the themes of determination for survival, mortality, friendship, with an exquisite touch of other devices such as poetry, symbolism or imagery, and tone. This paper aims at dissecting this subject matter through a detailed analysis of the plot created throughout the novel. Since the story is based on the true life experience of Stephen Crane, the setting of the story, therefore, is determined by the actual event off the coast of Florida. As mentioned in the story, the setting area of the story is the Mosquito Inlet. Based on the occurrence of the real event, the story is contextualized within the period of January 1897 (enotes 7). The main theme expressed by Stephen Crane in the story is nature s indifference towards man or nature versus man. The author elaborates the realization of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 33. The Reality Of Television Programs Today s television programs are very different from the television programs that were shown over fifty years ago. The shows in the past portrayed a modest conservative family. These families consist of a hardworking man and a stay at home woman, married raising their own biological children. As the years went by, television has started to portray a more liberal definition of what a family means in today s world. Because of today s TV shows, there are different ideas about what a family should look like. Families on TV are not always a married couple containing one man and one woman raising their own children. We now have many shows that support gay rights when it comes to marriage and being parents. The hit comedy Modern Family has the funny loveable characters of Mitchell and Cameron. They adopted a baby girl from Vietnam. The series also shows the wedding between the two men, as well as the comical outcomes when they try to raise their daughter the best way possible. Soon after wards, when he has noted the obstacles that the Trojans meet in their wanderings, he again ends a period in the similar note: Such was the cost in heavy toil of beginning the life of Rome (I, 33). Once again, when Venus complains that her son Aeneas is unjustly treated, Jupiter replies not only by promising that all will be well for Aeneas but by giving a prophetic sketch of Roman history to Julius Caesar. This reward, which the ancestor is to receive, is much more than his own success or glory, more even than his settlement in Italy. It is the assurance of the Roman destiny, of universal and unending dominion: To Romans I set no boundary in space or time. I have granted them dominion, and it has no end (I, 278 79). As we can see, at the outset Vergilius shows what kind of destiny is the subject of his poem. • 41. The Primacy Of Salomon V Salomon s The Corporate Veil In this light the Supreme Court, in order to arrive at a fair outcome for the wife, managed to set aside the companies separate legal personality without actually lifting the corporate veil. As a result of this ruling, it is lucid that the primacy of Salomon v Salomon has been affirmed. Nonetheless, the case itself is significant as it also recognized for the first time that piercing the corporate veil is possible; albeit in limited circumstances. As such, rather then being referred to as an archetype of the courts reluctance towards corporate disregard, the case suggests the antitheses. Evidence of this can be found in Lord Sumption s declaration that a recognition of a limited power to pierce the corporate veil, in carefully defined circumstances, is necessary if the law is not to be disarmed in the face of abuse . In addition, Lord Sumption s attempt in Prest to formulate a principled method to veil piercing, which in itself will be discussed in greater detail later in this essay, has provided a renewed beginning to an already complex area of company law (tan chang article). In essence, while it is true that the threshold in which the corporate veil may be pierced has been raised, a detailed analysis of the case illustrates that the abuse of corporate personality will not go unpunished (tera firm/mcardle).
