Objectives
• To make you guys get familiar with game development.
• To tell you guys how fun game development is.
• To encourage you guys to choose game development as a
career.
• To tell you all how game development does not require
any funds as a startup.
Content
1.Overview.
2.Development process.
3.Marketing and game industry.
4.Game development as a startup.
5.Conclusion.
Define: video game
• A game played by
electronically manipulating
images produced by a
computer program on a
television screen or other
display screen.
Game engine:a game engine is a
software that provides you with a 3D
or 2D space and all the tools required
to develop a game.
Overview
Games are produced through the software development
process. Games are developed as a creative outlet and to
generate profit. Game making is considered both art and
science. There are certain game engines in the market for
indie game devs and small companies such as
Unity,Unreal engine,Godot,etc. Large game studios
actually have their own game engine. Well-made games
bring profit more readily. However, it is important to
estimate a game's financial requirements, such as
development costs of individual features. Failing to
provide clear implications of game's expectations may
result in exceeding allocated budget. Most developers
cannot afford to change their development schedule mid-
way, and require estimating their capabilities with
available resources before production.
Development process
Game development is a software development
process, as a video game is software with art, audio,
and gameplay. Formal software development methods
are often overlooked. Games with poor development
methodology are likely to run over budget and time
estimates, as well as contain a large number of bugs.
Planning is important for individual and group projects
alike. Firstly we start with planning a game that is to be
made then we use a game engine to implement all our
plans by designing and building all the characters,
designing the background or the space in which the is
to be played and lastly use a coding language to make
the physics and the behaviour of the game work.
Marketing and
game industry
If we talk about the big game producing
companies like Activison, Gameloft,
Ubisoft,etc. These game producers have
similar distribution to that of music and
film industry. They first produce the
game, every process is done by a
different team like designing is
assigned to a different team, character
modelling is done by a different a team,
coding is done by a different team and
at last testing is done by a different
person or a team.
if a game passes all the tests without
having any bugs. it is then launched at
any of the game or app store such as
steam, epic games, etc. on pc, if the
game is for mobile devices it is
launched on play store or apple app
store. Now lets talk about how games
make money, most of the pc games
charge money ahead to be able to
download them, others provide it for
free but they have in game app-
purchases like buying a character,
weapons, equipments and in game
currencies, etc. Other than that some
games earn money by having ads in
Game development as a startup
Requirements:-
Skill-wise:-
• Know how to use a game
engine.
• 3D modelling or drawing.
• Little bit of sound
production.
• Coding language(to be
used in the game engine).
Asset-wise:-
• A high performance
laptop or a pc.
• A graphics tablet(not
necessarily).
Softwares:-
• A game
engine(e.g.Unity,Unreal,etc.)
• 3D modelling/Drawing
software(e.g.Blender)
• Sound production
software(e.g.FL studio)
• Coding software(e.g.VS,VS
code)
Why game development
is almost cost free as a
startup?
It is because everything I
mentioned so far doesn’t actually
requires a penny and even after
production, if you are going to
publish it on play store, all you’ve
to do is buy a one-time purchase
licence which costs around 25$
and after that you can publish as
many games as you want on play
store.
Conclusion
At last all I can conclude is that game
development is fun if you at least try it for
once, it has a really good scope for
making money by working at a good
company or as a startup, even after you
are not interest on making money from
games, I strongly recommend you to do it
just for fun. You can actually learn to
make games for free because of the free
content available on youtube, you can try
learning it from codemoney,Brackeys,etc.
