11. Read the passage.
(a) Complete the flow of food below during the digestion process.
16
Digestion is the braking down of food into simples form so that can be absorbed into the
bloodstream. Digestion occurs in along alimentary canal. Digestion of carbohydrate begins in the
mouth where amylase enzyme breaks down starch into glucose. When we swallow, food passes into
the oesophagus by peristalsis. Peristalsis pushes the food into the stomach. Digestion of protein
begins in the stomach where protease enzyme in gastric juice digests proteins into polypeptides. The
stomach also secretes hydrochloric acid to kill the germs and microorganism in food. Duodenum is
the first part of small intestine. It receive bile from the gall bladder and pancreatic juice from
pancrease. Pancreatic amylase breaks down starch into maltose, lipase enzyme break down fats into
glycerol and fatty acid and protease enzyme breaks down protein into polypeptides. The digestion of
food is completed in the small intestine. Food that enters the ileum is mixed with the intestinal juice.
The intestine juice contains amylase, protease and lipase enzymes. Amylase enzyme breaks down
maltose into glucose, protease enzyme breaks down polypeptide into amino acids while lipase
enzyme breaks down fats into fatty acid and glycerol. Undigested food will be transported to the
large intestine. In this part, the reabsorption of water takes place. After the water is reabsorbed ,
the undigested food turns into faeces and they are stored in the rectum. The feaces are then
expelled from the body through the anus.
