Variants [ ʌ ], [ ɝ ], and [ ɑ ]
We have already noted that some books use [y] instead of [j], [ən] instead of [n̥], and
[əl instead of [!]. In a similar way, some books use these variants:
[ ʌ ] represents [ ə ] when stressed or accented.
[ ɝ ] represents [ ɚ ] when stressed or accented.
[ ɑ ] represents [ a ] in all cases.

Pronouncing Unfamiliar Words
This isthe final lesson onthe symbols of the International Phonetic Alphabet. From this time
on, the student will be able to consult a dictionary employing IPA transcriptions to find the
pronunciation of unfamiliar words which he encounters in his reading.
In future classes students may be requested to bring their dictionaries in order to do some
practice workfindingthe transcriptionsof standardpronunciationsof unfamiliar words which the
instructor will write on the blackboard.

Let us suppose that you are in doubt concerning the pronunciation of the following words.

appears in Kenyon and Knott´s A Pronouncing Dictionary of American English).
