This document outlines a proposed research study on assessing psychosocial stressors and levels of depression among elderly tobacco users living in urban slum areas of Bangladesh. The study aims to examine patterns of tobacco use, psychosocial stressors associated with use, and levels of depression among elderly slum dwellers. A mixed methods approach including surveys and focus groups will be used. The study proposes to recruit 384 elderly tobacco users from selected slums in Dhaka to participate. Rigorous methods for sampling, data collection, analysis and ensuring ethical standards are described. The research team is well positioned to conduct the study and findings could help inform tobacco control interventions for elderly slum populations.
