Stephen Gerald Breyer was born in San Francisco, California on August 15, 1938. Breyer is known for his pragmatic approach to constitutional law and is associated with the liberal side of the court. Samuel Anthony Alito, Jr. was born in Trenton, New Jersey on April 1, 1950. Alito was nominated to take Sandra Day O’Connor’s seat in October 2005.  He is considered to be a conservative jurist. Sandra Day O’Conner was born in El Paso, Texas on March 26, 1930. She was also the first woman to serve as an associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. She was a strict constructionist.(Retired)

Morgan  Liberal Judge Lee Gates 55 year old sole black judge in Clark County District Court Received bachelor’s degree from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, in 1974.  Graduated from the University of Colorado  at Boulder law school in 1977.  Served as chief district judge for two years, starting in 1998, has served on the Supreme Court Task Force on Gender, Racial, Economic Bias and led the State Bar’s minority relations committee.
 
When a party requests a Supreme Court decision, it files a petition for a writ of certiorari (“to be made certain). These petitions are screened by the Court’s law clerks, and then reviewed by the Justices on the rule of 4 basis noted above.  When the Justices accept a case, they then decide whether to ask for more information and oral arguments from the attorneys or whether to decide the case quickly based on the attorneys briefs. Cases decided without further information are announced with a per curium decision. This is a very brief statement of the Court’s decision.
