2. University of Nicosia- Geology
Program
• The Summer in Cyprus geology program is
designed for geology students who would like
the opportunity to study Cyprus, a geologically
interesting country. The Troodos massif is
probably the most intensively studied and best
known ophiolite in the world.
• Ophiolites are terrestrial fragments of ancient
oceanic lithosphere formed at fossil
constructive plate margins. This program will
combine academic work with guided field
excursions to Troodos and other geologically
important sites in Cyprus

5. Nicosia, Cyprus
• Mosques and palm trees give an oriental atmosphere to the old city.
Wander round narrow streets with overhanging balconies and the
beautiful restored pedestrian precinct with craft shops, cafes and taverns.
• Nicosia is the capital of Cyprus, and it combines the old and new in a
busy modern commercial and business center with a centuries-old
culture.
• The center of the city is it’s old quarter surrounded by a Venetian
sandstone fortress wall with a moat and heart-shaped bastions.
• The new city spreads beyond the walls with a modern Europeanized
center of high-rise buildings, office blocks, shops and pavement cafes.

before you leave!
• If you are a US citizen you do not
need a Visa
• You do need a valid Passport
• Copies of other personal
identification
• You should be up to date on routine
vaccines.
• Attire for warm climate

9. Things to know before you go!
• Patriarchal society
• Currency- Euro
• Driving follows British UK standard (keep left!)
• Travel adapter needed for UK output with 3-pins
• Public binge drinking is not tolerated
• Official languages are both Greek and Turkish
• When entering a sacred place of worship men and women must cover
their arms and legs

• Notify your bank before leaving the country
• Always have local cash as not everyone will accept a credit
card
• Activate your phones global capabilities
• Beware of any travel alerts and warning for your destination
• Make sure you have the contact information for the nearest
U.S. Embassy or Consulate where you are going
• Carry a minimum number of valuables and plan places to
conceal them
• Make photocopies of all travel documents in case of
emergencies and leave one with a friend or relative at home
• Learn local laws and customs
