Editor's Notes

  1. When you lose your job, you may experience w wide range of emotions. Your reaction may include sadness, anger, fear, numbness & shame. Experiencing this roller coaster is normal. Accept the fact that there will be both good & bad days. There may be times when you feel that you are making no progress. Resist the temptation to blame yourself or others. Job loss, like any loss means letting go of something valuable. Job loss is a major life event not unlike death of a loved one , divorce or serious injury. Its painful, shocking & depressing. Don’t be surprised if you go thru 5 stages of grief . Denial/shock (this isn’t happening to me!) Anger (why is this happening to me?) Depression (I don’t care anymore) Bargaining (I promise I’ll be a better person if …) Acceptance (I’m ready for whatever comes) Know your audience – the job, the company, the culture Isaiah 40:29-31 The LORD give strength to the weary & increases the power of the weak. Even youths grow tired & weary, and young men stumble & fall’ but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run & not grow weary, they will walk & not be faint.
  2. Jeremiah 29:11 For I know the plans I have for you. Says the LORD. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future & a hope. Why anxious? Pride – you are more interested in impressing the interviewer than you are about learning about the needs of the company & how you can be of value Lack of preparation – you haven’t spent enough time doing your homework Phil 4:6-7 Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer & petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. An the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts & minds in Christ Jesus.
  3. The interview is NOT a police interrogation – its not a time to shut up and wait for your attorney . Its also not a monologue like Jay Leno or David Letterman do on TV, It’s a dialog between 2 people who are exchanging information Interviewing is about helping others (the employer) become more successful, while also moving your career forward & gaining you meaningful employment Why should we hire you? Discover what the employer truly needs (the deliverables) Document your knowledge, skills and experience to do the job Demonstrate your ability to do the job with greater profitability to the company than the other candidates (value) Display your ability to motivate yourself and/or others (energy & enthusiasm) Describer your ability to fit in with the company culture (chemistry) Information about the job, the company & the culture Goal for the interview – lists of points you want to cover in the interview – your strengths, accomplishments and fit; to get a 2d interview and to get an offer
  4. ACCOMPLISHMENTS - Situation, Task, Action taken, Results Start with an active verb – 1to 2 lines Performance reviews. Recommendations on Linked-In; In the last 6 moths what activity are you proud of? Why? If you were to write an article for the Readers’ Digest entitled “The Greatest Accomplishment in My Career”, What would you write about? Uses $s, and %s where possible, to convey impact. Use before & after comparisons - with competitors, the industry, your predecessor What were the results in terms of making or saving money for the company? How did the result save time, make work easier, or solve a problem? How did the activity make the company more competitive or increase business? How did the activity build relationships with internal or external customers? How did the accomplishment expand the business, attract new customers or retain existing customers? Ask yourself about the achievement:: SO WHAT? WHAT’S the SIGNIFICANCE? WHAT’s the REST of the STORY? WHAT RESULTED FROM the ACTIVITY?
  5. Questions to be asked – What are the priorities that need to be addressed immediately? How long was the prior incumbent here? Why did they leave? Tell me about your management style. How do you bring out the best in your employees? What types of people excel here? How long have you bee with the company? Why do you stay? What do you know about our company Why would you like to join our company? What are you looking for in a new position? What are your 3 strongest qualities or greatest strengths? What are 3 areas for improvement ((your greatest weakness)? What did you like most (least) in your last job? Why have you been unemployed for so long?
  6. LISTEN to the question before answering The Gatekeepers – the security guard, the receptionist, the admin Courtesy – to everyone – the Gatekeepers, the interviewers & hiring manager Clarify the deliverables – what’s expected. Don’t talk too much. L3 example Illegal questions - Do you have children? Who cares for your children? Are you married? What’s your religion? Do you have any health problems? Do you have any problems working with minorities? Women? So how am I doing? How do I compare to the others you’ve interviewed? On a scale of 1 to 10, how would you rate me? How do you respond at eh end of the interview to “do you have any questions?” The wrong answer is “No, you’ve answered everything on my list.”
  7. Tell me about a time you disregarded company policy? Improved a process in your work area, (dept)? Give an example that demonstrates your leadership ability. Tell about a time you used your writing skills to close a deal or sell an idea or concept. Describe a situation where you went the extra mile to have a satisfied customer.
  8. While I do not have all of the qualifications you are seeking, I was selected to come for an interview, IN my last position I did not meet all of the requirements being sought, and learned them in a short period of time and was performing to expectations. While I only have 1 year of experience, it covers the range of your requirements and I have performed at the level of co-workers with double my experience. You are seeking the best qualified candidate for this position and you ‘ve indicated that I more than met the requirements. So are you going to hire someone less qualified to do this important job? The skills and experience I have in Accounting (Design Engineering, Sales, HR, Recruiting, Contract Administration, Financial Analysis) in another industry are transferable. Before we let salary eliminate me from consideration, I would like to inquire about the rest of the compensation package. To discuss my salary requirements.
  9. So how am I doing? Do you have any concerns about my ability to perform the job? Ask what the hiring process is and how far along they are. When do you anticipate making a decision? When can I expect to hear from you? Is it alright if I call you next Tuesday? Take their business card & right the date on the back. If they have said yes, you have permission to call them. Thanks you notes to EVERYONE not just the recruiter or hiring manager & asking them to forward to the others. Email vs. snail mail or BOTH. Do an honest assessment of the interview. What could you have done differently , better? Follow up. Send a thank you not if your rejected! Is it OK if I touch bases with you in 4 to 6 weeks\\? They may have another opening or may know of another position that they will pass along.
