individuals in unfortunate situations

8. 1) Addressing the root of the problem
• Eliminating poverty in Canada needs to involve addressing the challenges that
major “high-risk” poverty groups face
• For instance, many individuals with mental disabilities or mental health issues
end up in poverty as a result of hardships such as divorce, being terminated
from a job, or death of a family member.
• Mental illness can also setup barriers for individuals to escape poverty, such as
the ability to acquire an education and long-term employment
• Individuals from other high-risk poverty groups face similar challenges. For
example, visible minorities who are immigrants may struggle to find
employment due to their education not being recognized
• It was reported in 2016 that 60 percent of the 844,000 unemployed and
underemployed Canadians were immigrants, because their credentials were
not being recognized

• Establish a funding program for low-income mature students in post-
secondary education and vocational training
• Counteracts the problem regarding how “adult workers are often excluded from
access to financial supports that allow them to access higher learning”
• Opens up the door for lower income individuals to take on the opportunity to
obtain valuable skills that can assist in securing employment, which in turn can
reduce poverty levels
