We all have the capacity to do work. Not only in the
physical sense of the word but in every facet of our
living, be it our jobs, our studies, an upcoming event, a
dance hall party or even writing an article. We all have
the capacity to perform the task; we all have the
potential energy to begin the voyage from a 10 meter
apex to the ground once all the parameters are taken
into consideration. Like a rock, a simple multiplication
or relative comparison of our mass, acceleration and
the task at hand can determine how much energy we
have and if we have the capacity to complete the task!

3. mass
So what is mass in this context? How do we measure mass?
In physics and as far as the concept of potential energy is
concerned, mass refers to the weight of an object.
Measured in kilograms in our formula above, the mass is a
critical factor in determining the potential energy of a body.
With you and I, mass would be referring to the content of
the individual or the company embarking on a task. By
content I refer to the planning, the preparedness, the
funding, the logistics, the contingency systems, the tools,
the resources. I refer to the availability of expertise,
knowledge and understanding of a task ahead. To perform
any task we must be prepared. We must have mass. To
create mass we must have passion.

4. passion
Passion; Seven letters of pure energy, an excessive drive
towards anything, Immeasurable enthusiasm! In itself, it’s
just a short word, but it’s so heavy with purpose, so deep
with direction, so meaningful yet so scarce.
If there’s any trait an organization wants in its staff, its
passion. Doing things by the book gets the job done, but
the willingness to exceed the customers’ expectations is
fueled by raw passion.
Unfortunately, managers, business owners, families
and even the consumers fail to appreciate this. They fail to
understand that to be good is not the limit, to be the best is
just the beginning!

5. acceleration
The third variable in our potential energy formula is acceleration;
the rate of change of speed with time. How fast are you? How
quickly do you think you can deliver? Ever started a job or a task
and found yourself thinking that at the rate you were going you
wouldn’t be able to meet the deadline? It happens all the time!
Senior management gives me a report to do and I start slow…really
slow. Three days to the deadline and I’m still gathering or sorting
data. My acceleration is always usually pretty slow at the beginning,
then just before the deadline, I start to pick it up. I start working in
frenzy at dangerous break-neck speeds. It’s like having to drive from
one point to the other. Where it would be better to move at a
steady rate of increasing speed with time, you decide to take your
time forgetting that you have to be at point B within a given time
frame

6. friction
Friction is defined as a force or resistance generated by virtue of two or
more objects rubbing against each other. In order words, friction
challenges motion. Naturally, this would make friction an enemy of the
physical world and indeed mechanics worldwide would tell you how it
causes wear and tear and destroys even the strongest of alloys. They are
right. Challenges, like friction, cause wear and tear. On the flip side,
friction does have its benefits. Without friction, we wouldn’t be able to
walk without slipping. We would slide our way to work because there
would be nothing to stop your feet once they hit the ground. We wouldn’t
be able to write. Our pens would simply slide along the page being unable
to pause to make words and sentences. Our cars would move without
stopping. The break system, primarily designed around friction would
cease to exist. (Now wouldn’t that be something!). So challenges, just like
friction, help us get it right. They help us place our feet at the right spots
so we can walk when we have to and run when we need to. We can slow
down and appraise situations when we come across challenges. We can
reflect and do things better when we meet a mountain to climb

7. distance
How far are you going? What’s your target? Where are
you going? Distance refers to the task at hand, the
objective. The job to be done! Distance is the reason
why you are on the job. Distance is the job itself. If you
had a business promotion programme planned then
the distance refers to the successful hosting and
execution of the program. Everything you do is to
ensure that you cover the distance required. The
distance is fixed. It doesn’t change. It is a factor that is
beyond your control. A goal is a goal, if the goal
changes then the calculation of potential energy must
change as well.
