The biggest headine at the 2009 Oracle OpenWorld was when Larry Ellison announced that Oracle was entering the hardware business with a pre-built database machine, engineered by Oracle. Since then businesses around the world have started to use these engineered systems. This beginner/intermediate-level session will take you through my first 100 days of starting to administer an Exadata machine and all the roadblocks and all the success I had along this new path.

There are many aspects to managing an RDBMS. Some of these are handled by an experienced DBA, but there are a good many things that any sys admin should be able to take care of if they know what to look for.
This presentation will cover basics of managing Postgres, including creating database clusters, overview of configuration, and logging. We will also look at tools to help monitor Postgres and keep an eye on what is going on. Some of the tools we will review are:
* pgtop
* pg_top
* pgfouine
* check_postgres.pl.
Check_postgres.pl is a great tool that can plug into your Nagios or Cacti monitoring systems, giving you even better visibility into your databases.
This technical presentation shows you the best practices with EDB Postgres tools, that are designed to make database administration easier and more efficient:
● Tune a new database using Postgres Expert
● Set up streaming replication in EDB Postgres Enterprise Manager (PEM)
● Create a backup schedule in EDB Postgres Backup and Recovery
● Automatically failover with EDB Postgres Failover Manager
● Use SQL Profiler and Index Advisor to add indexes
The presentation also included a demonstration. To access the recording visit www.enterprisedb.com and access the webcast recordings section or email info@enterprisedb.com.
Upgrades suck. We get it. They are risky and time consuming and you have better things to do. In this talk we'll present good reasons to upgrade anyway and give suggestions on how to de-risk your upgrades. Straight from the team that upgrades Kafka almost every week. We'll review all the releases in the past year - major, minor and bug-fixes. We'll explain the differences between those and what can you expect from each. We'll go into the most important features and most critical fixes and improvements, so you'll have ample ammunition when you explain to your boss why you really have to upgrade Kafka. Then we'll discuss how we validate new releases and suggest a safe upgrade process - because we know that uneventful upgrades are a key to the next upgrade.
Oracle Real Application Clusters (RAC) 12c Rel. 2 - Operational Best PracticesMarkus Michalewicz
This presentation discusses operational best practices considering the increasing tendency to use automation to tackle repetitive tasks, which changes how best practices are applied. The presentation therefore introduces and explains which Oracle tools can and should be used to apply best practices. It also discusses "smart features" that one will benefit from automatically after upgrading to Oracle RAC 12c Rel. 2. This presentation was first presented during UKOUG Tech17.

Replication and Consistency in Cassandra... What Does it All Mean? (Christoph...DataStax
Many users set the replication strategy on their keyspaces to NetworkTopologyStrategy and move on with modeling their data or developing the next big application. But what does that replication strategy really mean? Let's explore replication and consistency in Cassandra.
How are replicas chosen?
Where does node topology (location in a cluster) come into play?
What can I expect when nodes are down I'm querying with a Consistency Level of local quorum?
If a rack goes down can I still respond to quorum queries?
These questions may be simple to test, but have nuances that should be understood. This talk will dive into these topics in a visual and technical manner. Seasoned Cassandra veterans and new users alike stand to gain knowledge about these critical Cassandra components.

MySQL Scalability and Reliability for Replicated EnvironmentJean-François Gagné
You have a working application that is using MySQL: great! At the beginning, you are probably using a single database instance, and maybe – but not necessarily – you have replication for backups, but you are not reading from slaves yet. Scalability and reliability were not the main focus in the past, but they are starting to be a concern. Soon, you will have many databases and you will have to deal with replication lag. This talk will present how to tackle the transition.
We mostly cover standard/asynchronous replication, but we will also touch on Galera and Group Replication. We present how to adapt the application to become replication-friendly, which facilitate reading from and failing over to slaves. We also present solutions for managing read views at scale and enabling read-your-own-writes on slaves. We also touch on vertical and horizontal sharding for when deploying bigger servers is not possible anymore.
Are UNIQUE and FOREIGN KEYs still possible at scale, what are the downsides of AUTO_INCREMENTs, how to avoid overloading replication, what are the limits of archiving, … Come to this talk to get answers and to leave with tools for tackling the challenges of the future.
Spark + Parquet In Depth: Spark Summit East Talk by Emily Curtin and Robbie S...Spark Summit
What if you could get the simplicity, convenience, interoperability, and storage niceties of an old-fashioned CSV with the speed of a NoSQL database and the storage requirements of a gzipped file? Enter Parquet.
At The Weather Company, Parquet files are a quietly awesome and deeply integral part of our Spark-driven analytics workflow. Using Spark + Parquet, we’ve built a blazing fast, storage-efficient, query-efficient data lake and a suite of tools to accompany it.
We will give a technical overview of how Parquet works and how recent improvements from Tungsten enable SparkSQL to take advantage of this design to provide fast queries by overcoming two major bottlenecks of distributed analytics: communication costs (IO bound) and data decoding (CPU bound).
This presentation is based on Lawrence To's Maximum Availability Architecture (MAA) Oracle Open World Presentation talking about the latest updates on high availability (HA) best practices across multiple architectures, features and products in Oracle Database 19c. MySQL Replication Performance Tuning for Fun and Profit!Vitor Oliveira
MySQL Replication, in addition to bringing high-availability, is the foundation to build high-performance MySQL database systems. Using read scale-out and sharding one can design systems that go from the capacity of a single server to supporting the largest internet sites. But to design and operate high-performance, efficient, manageable and reliable deployments requires knowing the intricacies of the underlying technologies.
This session will provide insights on the main factors that affect the performance of Asynchronous Replication and Group Replication, and how to configure them to make the most out of the underlying computing system. It will also show the latest developments in MySQL 5.7 and 8.0, in areas spanning from group communication to the multi-threaded slave applier, and how effective they are in helping meet the performance requirements in terms of throughput, latency and durability to support the most demanding workload types.

"Impact of front-end architecture on development cost", Viktor TurskyiFwdays
I have heard many times that architecture is not important for the front-end. Also, many times I have seen how developers implement features on the front-end just following the standard rules for a framework and think that this is enough to successfully launch the project, and then the project fails. How to prevent this and what approach to choose? I have launched dozens of complex projects and during the talk we will analyze which approaches have worked for me and which have not.

Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.
Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.
