Rahul Biswas and Kartik Sehgal propose stopping the use of synthetic hair dyes by restoring enzymes in the body that are degraded by oxidative stress and prevent hair from graying. They aim to genetically manipulate pathways like BMP-4 and increase production of enzymes like tyrosinase, MSR-A, MSR-B and catalase to protect melanocytes from stress and prevent graying, without using synthetic dyes or chemicals. If successful, this could provide a unique treatment for gray hair through diet and genetic changes rather than commercial products.

Hair loss is a common problem for women that can be caused by a variety of factors including aging, menopause, thyroid issues, stress, medications, medical treatments like chemotherapy, and hereditary conditions. There are many potential treatments depending on the underlying cause, such as minoxidil, laser therapy, hair transplants, or treating a medical condition causing the hair loss. Seeing a dermatologist can help diagnose the reason for hair loss and prescribe an effective treatment plan.
1) Hirsutism is defined as excessive terminal hair growth in androgen-dependent areas of the body in women, which grows in a typical male distribution pattern. It is often caused by androgen overproduction or increased sensitivity to androgens. Diagnosis is usually clinical and confirmed with laboratory testing. Treatment options include oral contraceptives, spironolactone, and anti-androgens.
2) Alopecia areata is an autoimmune disease causing patchy, non-scarring hair loss. It affects the scalp and sometimes other hair-bearing areas. Treatment focuses on reducing inflammation and regrowth of hair. Options include topical corticosteroids, immunotherapy, and supportive
Hair diseases are disorders primarily associated with the follicles of the hair. Many hair diseases can be associated with distinct underlying disorders. Hair disease may refer to excessive shedding or baldness (or both). Balding can be localized or diffuse, scarring or non-scarring.
This document discusses different types of hair loss including thinning hair, baldness, alopecia areata, and androgenic alopecia. Androgenic alopecia is the most common type and is caused by the hormone DHT which shrinks hair follicles, particularly on the top of the head. Treatments include finasteride which blocks DHT production, serums containing natural ingredients like saw palmetto which also blocks DHT, and hair transplants. Leimo is highlighted as a treatment that uses saw palmetto extracts along with low-level laser therapy to stimulate hair regrowth and prevent further hair thinning.

Inconsistent use of harsh hair products should be avoided. Regular exercise, a healthy diet, getting enough sleep and using herbal products containing saw palmetto extracts can help prevent hair loss and promote hair growth. Leimo products contain saw palmetto which inhibits DHT in the scalp and provides a natural treatment regime for problematic hair.
HAIR DAMAGE: CAUSES, PREVENTION AND CURESDr. Ali Syed
Hair damage occurs when the hair structures like the cuticle, cortex, and medulla are physically or chemically altered such that they cannot return to their original state. Common types of damage include cuticle loss, longitudinal rupturing, and fibril disintegration. Damaged hair exhibits signs like loss of elasticity, breakage, porosity, dullness, and excessive tangling. Causes of damage include UV exposure, mechanical and chemical manipulation, thermal styling, and harsh shampoos. Treatments include deep conditioning, reconstructors, moisturizers, and laminates to repair damage and improve hair health.
Alopecia is defined as hair loss from areas where hair normally grows. There are several types of alopecia including alopecia areata (patchy hair loss), alopecia totalis (total hair loss of the scalp), alopecia universalis (total hair loss of the entire body), and androgenetic alopecia (male or female pattern baldness). Causes can include autoimmune conditions, certain medications, medical conditions, radiation/chemotherapy, and genetics. Diagnosis involves history, physical exam, and sometimes blood tests. Treatment options include minoxidil, finasteride, corticosteroid injections, wigs, hair transplants, massage, and UV light therapy.
Hair Structure:- Hair is mostly made up of keratin, which is also found in the skin and nails. Each strand of hair is comprised of three distinct layers:
Cuticle – the outermost protective layer of the hair shaft.
Cortex – mainly composed of keratin, this layer gives the hair its strength, color, shape, elasticity, and texture.
Medulla – the innermost or core layer is usually only present in coarse hair, and absent in fine strands.
Hair Growth Cycle:- Hair follicles grow in repetitive cycles, which include three phases:
Anagen - growth phase, which typically continues for 150 weeks on the scalp.
This document discusses natural ways to prevent baldness, specifically the herbal supplement Leimo. It describes how male pattern baldness is caused by the hormone DHT binding to hair follicles. Leimo contains saw palmetto extracts, which work similarly to Propecia to block the 5-alpha reductase enzyme that converts testosterone to DHT. This prevents DHT from damaging hair follicles. Leimo also contains other ingredients that block androgen receptors and stimulate hair regrowth. Using Leimo can help revitalize hair follicles so they can produce healthy thick hair again. Leimo also offers a handheld laser device that uses cold laser therapy to make hair thicker, stronger, and healthier.
Alopecia, or hair loss, is a condition where hair is lost from some or all areas of the body, usually the scalp. It is thought to be an autoimmune disorder where the body attacks its own hair follicles, causing inflammation and suppressed hair growth. There are different types of alopecia that vary based on the areas of hair loss. Alopecia is typically treated through corticosteroid injections, oral corticosteroids, or topical ointments, though these treatments do not cure the underlying disease and hair loss may still occur. The prognosis is that hair will typically grow back in 90% of cases, though in 10% of cases some or no hair will regrow.
Different factors may cause hair loss. Aging and genetics are only a few. But in men, basically, it is caused by dehydrotestosterone hormone, or DHT. This hormone’s chief purpose is to develop the traits of men such as deep voice, larger muscles, and mustache. However, it also develops Male Pattern Baldness. What this hormone does is it accumulates and develops in the DHT receptors found around the follicles of hair. As the hormone has established itself, it will eventually kill the hair as well as the follicle, making it hopeless for hair to grow back.
The document discusses causes and remedies for hair fall. It identifies nutritional deficiencies, hormonal imbalances, thyroid issues, polycystic ovary syndrome, birth control pills, stress, hairstyling products, and medical conditions as potential causes of hair loss. Natural remedies provided include egg masks, licorice root, coconut milk, green tea, beetroot juice, Greek yogurt and honey, aloe vera, fenugreek seeds, onion juice, and amla. A healthy diet containing spinach, carrots, eggs, oats, walnuts, and lentils is also recommended to promote hair growth.

The document discusses different types of hair loss including alopecia, androgenetic alopecia in men and women, traction alopecia, and their causes and treatments. It describes the hair growth cycle and tests used to evaluate hair loss. Common treatments for androgenetic alopecia include minoxidil, finasteride, and spironolactone depending on the patient's sex and symptoms. Traction alopecia is caused by hairstyles that pull on hair and can be prevented by less tight styling.
Alcohol and smoking can slow hair growth by reducing blood flow to the scalp. A lack of proteins in the diet can also lead to hair loss, so eating foods like rice, beans, and drinking protein shakes can help. Stress is a major cause of temporary hair loss, as the body sees it as a threat and focuses resources elsewhere. Hair loss from stress usually grows back once the body returns to normal.
1) Male pattern baldness, also known as androgenetic alopecia, is caused by a combination of genetic and hormonal factors. Genes inherited from both parents play a role in baldness susceptibility.
2) The male hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which is produced from the conversion of testosterone by the enzyme 5-alpha reductase, attaches to receptors on hair follicles and causes them to miniaturize over time.
3) Baldness is a progressive condition that develops over many years as the genetically inherited tendency interacts with aging and DHT levels in the scalp. There is no permanent cure except for surgical hair transplants.

The document discusses male pattern baldness, also known as androgenetic alopecia, which accounts for over 95% of hair loss in men. By age 35, two-thirds of men experience some hair loss and by age 50, around 85% have significantly thinning hair. The document outlines the causes of male pattern baldness, which is generally due to a genetic sensitivity to dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT shrinks hair follicles over time, eventually stopping hair production. The document provides information on diagnosing male pattern baldness and treatments that have been proven effective, such as Propecia.
Argan Oil is frequently called liquid gold of Morrocco, is an oil produced from the kernels of the argan tree, endemic to Morocco, that is valued for its nutritive, cosmetic and numerous medicinal properties. The argan tree grows only in the south west of Morocco. The argan oil has been used for the remedy and cosmetics since the ancient ages. The argan oil is %100 natural, pure and unique. The argan tree is under the protection of UNESCO against extinction. The scientific studies have shown that there isn't any product equivalent to Argan oil.
- Pure argan oil is absorbed by hair fastly and it nourishes and moistures hair and gives shine to hair.
- Argan oil is a light oil that does not leave a greasy feel on the hair like the other oils such as olive oil etc.
- Argan oil helps to prevent hair loss.
- Argan oil is suitable for both men and women.
Natural argan oil is known for its revitalizing action of the hair, especially at its root (radical action). Argan oil prolongs the life of the hair and promotes growth both in men than women, because it stimulates the production of keratin , an essential constituent of hair. Our luscious ARGANRain products are formulated expertly using organic argan oil and plant based ingredients to make your hair grow faster, stop hair loss and full of life.ArganRain can be a fast way to help stop thinning hair, can help stop baldness, and help promote hair growth. Creating a healthy environment on the scalp is key to having thick, full hair growth.
To efficiently stop hair loss, it is important to understand the cause and seek treatment. Visiting a hair care clinic can help identify the appropriate treatment to not only stop hair fall but also stimulate regrowth. For male pattern baldness, which is often hereditary, treatments containing DHT inhibitors are recommended since DHT causes hair loss. Minoxidil solution is one such treatment but has been known to cause side effects. Herbal ingredients like saw palmetto extracts, which inhibit DHT without side effects, are now widely used in effective hair loss prevention and regrowth products.

1. GRAY HAIRS: STAYING BLACK
WITHOUT DYES

2. ABSTRACT
• These days everyone is troubled by falling hair and their hair going gray at
some age group or the other. Most of the people are trapped in the
gimmicks of hair clinics without knowing what they exactly do to restore
the hair loss. Here is a poster to make you aware about the exact
mechanism taking place in the scalp that does the trick and makes such
changes, that changes our prestige into trouble. The idea is to restore the
enzymes that get degraded due to the oxidative stress and the enzyme
that prevents our skin from going gray. If we can manage to restore these
magical enzymes in the body, then we can definitely stop using the
synthetic dyes.
• Keywords: hair scalp, enzymes, gray hair, scalp, skin, stress.
3. STATEMENT OF PROBLEM
• People these days are troubled with their
shiny black hair turning gray.
• To prevent this, they resort to using synthetic
dyes and hair colors, and are ultimately
trapped in the gimmicks of fake hair clinics.
• People consider the synthetic dyes and hair
colors as a great measure to temporary color
their hair and no one notices the damage
done to the hair by these chemicals.
• There may be many causes that cause graying
of hair, both internal and external.
4. CAUSES OF HAIR GRAYING:INTERNAL
• Degradation of melanin-producing melanocytes in hair follicle.
• Accumulation of Hydrogen peroxide in hair follicle in significant
amounts.
• Vitamin B-12 deficiency or problems in pituitary
or thyroid gland
• Lipid Peroxidation
• Hereditary factors.
• Chronic health ailments
5. INTERNAL FACTORS
• Depletion of key enzymes like catalase, MSR-A,
MSR-B(methionine sulfoxide reductase) that are responsible for
breakdown of hydrogen peroxide and stabilization of free
radicals.
• Blockage of melanin producing enzyme, tyrosinase by the
action of oxidative stress(hydrogen peroxide), or some mutation.
• Changes(inactivation or over-expression) in “wnt” gene
pathways such as mutation, or stress inactivation.
6. EXTERNAL FACTORS
• Poor diet planning.
• Use of commercial shampoos.
• Use of commercial scented hair oils.
• Use of commercial hair colours / dyes.
• Smoke genotoxicants
• Pollutants
• Prolonged exposure to UV-A or UV-B.
• Mental stress and prolonged pressure
7. ROLE OF HAIR GROWTH CYCLE
• The telogen stage indicates a temporary stop in
the activity of melanocytes, and the activation
is caused by Shh signalling pathways.
• BMP-4(bone morphological protein) is a major inhibitor of the
Shh(Sonic hedgehog) pathway, but another protein known as
noggin blocks the BMP-4, hence allowing a smooth hair growth.
• Hence, any external or internal factor or a genetic mutation which
is capable of inhibiting the noggin protein can cause graying of
hair, and also stop hair growth.
8. ADVANCES IN OUR UNDERSTANDING OF
HAIR GRAYING
• The scientists working at the hair color company, L'Oreal, are using
an enzyme, TRP-2 to develop a pill that could, according to them,
convert gray hair into black.
• Naito et al. have found that lipid peroxides(linolein
hydroperoxide) can induce the production of free radicals, that can
cause apoptosis in hair follicle cells, as well as epidermal
keratinocytes and melanocytes.
• It has also been found that apoptosis of hair follicle cells leads to
early onset of catagen phase.
• Harman et al. first proposed this 'free radical theory of aging‘ in
1956. This theory was given in relation to aging of hair, and hence
graying.
9. ADVANCES IN OUR UNDERSTANDING OF
HAIR GRAYING
• Wood et al. have demonstrated for the first
time that human white scalp hair shafts
accumulate hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) in
millimolar concentrations, and almost absent
catalase and methionine sulfoxide reductase
(MSR) protein expression in association with
functional loss of methionine sulfoxide repair
in the entire gray hair follicle.
• Scientists at Kanazawa University(Japan) are
leading a study that states that genotoxic
stress is responsible for DNA damage in the
hair, that also causes hair greying.
• Mosley and Gibbs were the first to indicate
a relationship between smoking and graying
of hair .
10. COMMON METHODS USED FOR
TURNING GRAY HAIR INTO BLACK HAIR
• Use of hair colorants / dyes.
• Use of commercial shampoos and hair-coloring gels.
• Consumption of supplements recommended by fake clinics.
11. HAIR DYE INDUSTRY- BUSINNESS
REVIEW
• The world hair care products industry witnessed 3% expansion in 2010,
generating revenue of almost $49 billion and volume sales of more than 15
billion units, according to MarketLine.
• In the year 2003, the consolidated sales of L'Oreal was €14.029 billion and
net profit was €1.653 billion.
• The market is expected to reach almost $58 billion in 2015, representing 18%
expansion over a five-year period. The market should hit a volume of almost
18 billion units in 2015 for a 19% growth rate.
• The entire worldwide cosmetic industry, sales reach about $170 billion a
year, out of which the contribution of hair care industry is about 20%($34
billion). It’s distributed pretty uniformly around the world with ~$40 billion
in the Americas, ~$60 billion in Europe, ~$60 billion in Australia & Asia, and
another $10 billion in Africa.
12. OUR AIM AND HYPOTHESIS
• Manipulation of pathways like BMP-4 such that it doesn't activate
to cause graying.
• Using genetic manipulations to increase the production of
enzymes such as tyrosinase, MSR-A, MSR-B, Catalase.
• Genetic manipulations in the codon of TRP-2, so that it protects
melanocytes inside the hair as well.
• Formation of a mixed compound that is a mixture of enzymes like
catalase, MSR-A & MSR-B, tyrosinase and TRP-2.
13. IMPACT OF THIS PROJECT
• Unique treatment for gray hair.
• No synthetic dye or color to be used.
• Better understanding of aging processes.
• Consumption of diet rich in anti-oxidants.
• Awareness among people about ill effects of hair colors, gels,
scented oils and mental stress.
• Better understanding of implications of pollution.
